Tanya at The Windham in Bellows Falls, VT August 27 and 28, 2004
Last year, we had Rock in Rockingham. This year, Tanya showcased her work with three shows at The Windham in Bellows Falls, VT. The first two shows were for recording her follow-up album to "Whisky Tango Ghosts". For these shows, she was joined by Dean, Rich, Joan Wasser (of Joan as Policewoman), Joe McMahon (of The Spaceshots and Senor Happy) and Arthur Johnson (who toured with Tanya for "Beautysleep") with special vocalist Bill Janovitz. For the third and final show, Peter Moore (of Count Zero and the recently completed "Whisky Tango Ghosts" tour) rejoined her, Dean and Rich for a live recording of some "Whisky Tango Ghosts" tour songs.
Due to the nature of live recordings, it wasn't possible to take pictures during the show. The click of the camera would be forever immortalized in the recording. The majority of these pictures aren't of the shows but of the experience of returning to Bellows Falls one year later. I hope you'll enjoy...
The Everyday Inn, the staple accommodation for most fans last year... Rick's Bar and Grille is no more though...
On route from the Everyday Inn to downtown...
"Welcome to Bellows Falls... A friendly place to hang your hat."
Some sights around Bellows Falls... the river, the square, the train tunnel, the mural of downtown, the clock tower...
Miss Bellows Falls Dinner, home of the "Big Mouth Burger"... still open, but with a for sale sign...
Nick's bar, one of the hangouts of this year's group of fans... Nick's, along with PK's Irish Pub up the street aways, served fans well with much needed air conditioning!
Happy Cat Cafe, another fan stop... It was a great place to get food and drinks. Next door is Oona, where Lakuna was screened last year...
A store front ad for the shows... with amazingly a flyer for a "Seven Sisters" show right next to it. (Tanya uses the phrase "seven sisters" in two of her songs. Just a coincidence though...)
Fans getting ready for the first show...
The first show consisted of the band playing each new song twice. With ten songs total, the concert went from 7:30 PM to almost 11 PM, with only a short intermission to cool everyone off! (It was very hot inside as the air conditioning had to be turned off due to noise.)
The Setlist: [Thanks to hemhaw!]
Kundalini Slide
River Girls
Little Wings
New England
Hungry Life
World on Fire
Day of Grace (new version)
To the Light House
Invisible One
Long, Long, Long (Beatle's cover)
I was lucky enough to get to sit in on a bit of the rehearsal the next afternoon...
The night of the last two shows... rainy... but it eventually cleared... The 7:30 PM show was similar to the night before except with songs being performed only once. The "9:30" show, which started more like at 10 PM, was a piece of the "Whisky Tango Ghosts" tour. Here, fans are lining up outside for the second show...
Rich is ready... Tanya and Dean are tuning up... and Peter as well...
The Setlist: [Thanks to hemhaw again!]
Divine Sweet Divide
My Life as A Ghost
Whiskey Tango
The Center
Butterfly Thing
Swoon
Untitled and Unsung
I'm Keeping You

Just in Case You Quit Me

Aftershow curtain call... for those who had been onstage (Joe, Dean, Rich, Joan, Tanya, Peter and Arthur)... and those in the background managing things (Patrick, Ezra, and Gary)...
The aftershow scene... Notice the rough size of the venue? The Windham has a capacity of 49, so very intimate. The venue is the lobby of the greater Windham Hotel, which had been shutdown since 1979. I did happen to talk to a former bellhop while waiting outside for the show. (He was around visiting.) He said that "back in the day", the Windham Hotel was quite happening, with folks driving up from Massachusetts just for the weekend. He saw tips as big as $100 just to move cars around!
[Nice hanging out ya tjk1985, VickyS, snax, lisajay, dream_carnival, hemhaw, Hector, Steve, Sean and Liesl!]
