trivia tanya!
Tanya's new album, beautysleep, will be out in a few weeks... but maybe you're not quite ready yet?! Maybe you need a few Tanya promo items to get you all worked up? Well, this trivia game is your ticket!
Thanks to 4AD/Beggars Group, I have a few trinkets to offer you, should you answer all these questions correctly!
First, the prizes:
Now for the rules:
The questions:
- What venue hosted the first ever Belly show?
I thought this question would be a freebie since the recent Boston Phoenix article, "Grace Notes", mentions the first Belly show in Boston as being at T.T. the Bears. This is true, except upon a second, more careful, reading, it would be revealed that it was the first ever *Boston* show... not the *first ever* Belly show. The venue honored with this distinction is the now defunct Three's in Newport, RI. (Both Kristin and Kim Deal were at this event.) I nullified this question, so everyone got it "right".
- Name the bands that Tanya had a helping hand in founding.
Easy one... Throwing Muses, The Breeders, and Belly
- What is Gracie's middle name?
Another easy one... Bee
- Name the song that Tanya altered the lyrics to for the Lovesongs for Underdogs tour.
For this question, I was looking for Feed the Tree, but one entry really dove into Tanya's re-workings of songs before release... Damion brought up Clean as being re-worked into Breathe Around You. Very clever.
- What were the new lyrics in question 4?
Obviously, if you got 4 wrong, 5 would be wrong too. (I'm letting Damion have this one.) The lyrics for Feed the Tree were altered to:
This old man I used to be/
Cut down the tree/
Things get broken and things go bust/
Ashes to ashes, dust to dust.
- Name the interesting book Tanya told interviewer Everett about in 1997.
The book was Coming of Age in the Milky Way. The interviewer was Everett True of the Melody Maker. (The interview, "Melody Maker interview (23/8/97)", is archived on Stew's Tanya site's extensive Interviews and Reviews section.) A lot of people got this right.
- What did Gary Smith suggest Tanya's answer should be if an interviewer asks her about "Belly"?
"I'VE NEVER HEARD OF BELLY." was Gary's suggestion. This answer could be found in NME's interview with Tanya dated November 30, 1996. (See "New Musical Express interview (30/11/96)" on Stew's site.)
- What does the "green door" in Swoon symbolize?
This question was drawn directly from Chris Kyllander's interview with Tanya (which can also be found on Stew's site. Look for "Tanya interview (13/11/97)"). From Tanya's own words, "Everybody has a parachute in their head, a place that they go to, that sort of cushions them from things they don't want to deal with, and the green door is my analogy for that. That's what I see when I think about escaping or repressing something." Most people alluded to the correct answer.
- The song title John Dark is pun about whom?
This answer is also drawn from Chris Kyllander's interview with Tanya, though this answer can be found elsewhere. The answer is Joan of Arc, which the French pronunciation sounds like John Dark in English.
- What is the title of the 12th song on "beautysleep"?
Head for Math is the 12th song. It's a hidden track, but has been posted as a track on a few sites.
- Pick a number between 1 and 100.
This was a tie-breaker question, but entries were far enough apart to separate the pack. The number is 14.
Good luck!
2/10 Oof! Was the trivia too easy? The first correct answers came in about three and a half hours of posting!! Also, so far, only six entries have been received.
2/13 With the lack of new entries, I've decided to end the trivia on Sunday.
2/17 The game is over.
