Reviews from the May 25, 1997 show at RCKNDY in Seattle

Submitted by Dangerous Dan:

Lisa Fay and Selene at RCKNDY I arrived at RCKNDY about an hour before show time to find a line already going partially around the block. This club has just recently been remodeled, after having been closed for a brief period, and now holds all-ages shows. From the looks of the crowd, there were definately a lot of people who had been waiting to see 7 Year Bitch live and who had not been able to get into Moe's the night pervious.

Shug (new spelling Shugg??) got things rolling with a tight set of hard driving rockers. The regular guitarist was not there for some reason,Selene and Elizabeth at RCKNDY but the guy who was filling in for her did a reasonable job, despite obviously not being as familiar with the songs. I've seen Shug a few times before and they always put on a solid show. It was obvious they were pleased with the crowd reaction and the singer commented that they'd rather play for all-ages crowds than for "a bunch of old drunks." They also thanked the people who had lined up at 3:00 (showtime was 8:00) in order to get a place up front.

In between Shug and Lost Goat, we were treated to the poetry of Mark Bruback. The crowd members were all getting ready to go take a break between sets, but he got immediate attention by holding up a roll of money and then proceeding to toss it into the audience.Selene and Elizabeth at RCKNDY Needless to say, people were frantically trying to grab as many bills as possible, but were then disappointed to find out they were all fake. His ploy having worked, he then went on to very loudly read his tributes to religion, the government, the CIA, etc., etc. to the delight of the many who were listening.

Lost Goat came out next and again treated us to a superb set of their heavy riffing. The opening song shows off their respective musical talents quite well. The drums start real low and toned down while the guitarist does quite an intro using a bow being drawn over the strings. After the slow buildup, the tempo suddenly changesSelene at RCKNDY and the bassist/vocalist comes crashing in and off they go. They do a good job of mixing up their rhythyms and tempos which keeps each song fresh and exciting. I would definately recommend taking a listen to them if you get the chance.

By this time, RCKNDY had gotten quite packed and people obviously were anxious to see 7YB. Daniel, Becky and Craig again made it to the show, plus Brooke (pstix) from Portland was there since she's not quite twenty-one yet. Brooke was pretty pumped to finally be getting to see her favorite band live.

Lisa Fay and Selene at RCKNDY The crowd erupted with a thunderous applause when Selene, Elizabeth, Valerie and Lisa Fay finally took the stage. They started off with 'The Scratch' and the room exploded. People started moshing it up and quickly thereafter the crowd surfing began. As with the night before, 'Blue Side' was again next and got quite a reaction.

Unfortunately, by this time, the stage divers started getting out of control. Seemed one after another was gettingSelene up on stage to take their turn. Selene's smile turned into an intense glare at this point and made it obvious she was getting fed up with these guys nearly hitting her each time they got up there. There were also a lot of younger people up front who had waited a long time to be in the front row and were not happy about having someone jump right on top of them.

Finally, after a guy caught Elizabeth's bass cord with his foot and unplugged it, Selene's patience had reached the breaking point and she asked for some security on stage. This greatly nullified, but didn't completely eliminate, the problem although the set proceeded without incident from that point on.

Lisa Fay and Elizabeth at RCKNDY

The sound was dead on and noticeably better than it was at Moe's. Lisa (L Fay as they like to call her) Fay's guitar and Selene's voice were loud and clear, unlike how they had been the night before. They all seemed really happy end energetic as well, and obviously were feeding off the energy from the crowd. Selene and Lisa turned and faced each other at several points and Elizabeth even joined Lisa for a bit of pogoing action.

Even though the setlist was quite similar, a couple of key differences were very welcome. They added 'Lorna'Selene at RCKNDY and another new song into the mix. It was great to hear 'Lorna' once again and the new song sounded fast and furious just like the others. These new songs of theirs are really, really good!

After the set, it was cool to see them come back out and meet with the fans. There were a lot of people that obviously idolized them and they were really nice about talking with and autographing stuff for each and every person who had waited. It definately was not a show to be missed!

The all-ages crowd was much more enthusiastic than the aged crowd the night before. They were not disappointed when "The Scratch" again got things rolling. "Blue Side" was second again. In fact the set list was quite similar to the night before. One exception was on this night they played "Lorna" the only song from the first album, Sick 'Em, they played at any of the three shows. Tonight Elizabeth dedicated "Whoopie Cat" to her sister Lindsay. "Miss Understood" again closed out the initial set. The three song encore began with a new song, followed by "It's Too Late" and "Hip Like Junk." Selene's vocals seemed to be the most clear at this venue, making many of the lyrics actually discernable. Lisa appeared much more energetic tonight and Val pounded away like crazy. Elizabeth at one point cooled off the crowd by spittting water on them. The show clocked in at about an hour.

7 Year Bitch rocked like I've never seen anybody rock before! I went to the rckndy (rockcandy) show last night, and Shugg (Elizabeth's sister's band) and Lost Goat (Who the hell knows) openned. It seemed at first that the crowd wasn't really into the first two bands, because all I saw were a few heads bouncing and three people holding their own little mosh pit in the back. But, after those two (and another little suprise... a really bizarre guy shouting poetry at the crowd... don't ask me) the stage was being set up for Bitch and the room flooded with people. The air got thick and hot and sticky (as usual) and people were chanting "bitch bitch bitch" you know... the typical drama. Then The Band came out and everybody freaked out screaming and yelling and shit. It was so cool. They played a 45 minute set (or maybe it was longer... I was rather busy so I don't really know...) Selene rocked back and forth and hung on that microphone like there was no tomorrow, and Elizabeth closed her eyes and listened to that beautiful bass, Valerie rules the drums and that new chick (I don't really remember her name) did a sweet job too! Needless to say, I was quite impressed.

7 Year Bitch played a show in seattle on 5/25 that rock the socks off the all ages crowd, the only problem with the show was their opening bands...... if their actual road touring bands that open for 7yb i feel sorry fer yall, but after suffering through their opening bands the crowd went wild when the bitches stepped on stage.... Their new stuff kicked ass and when called back for encore they threw some more of the best stuff the bitches know, if they are playing with lost goat and shugg where you are you may wanna show up a little late to miss the openers...
