Reviews from the July 6, 1996 show at Summerfest in Milwaukee

Submitted by Jeff:

I went to see 7 Year Bitch open for the Summerland Tour on July 6 in Milwaukee, and it was one of the best 7YB shows I have ever seen. The crowd was totally into it, and the band was really on.

The show was an all-ages show which was open to the general public attending Summerfest. Summerfest is an annual event sponsored by Milwaukee's beer companies, and features 12 stages running shows at the same time, along with all kinds of food and beer vending places throughout the grounds down by Lake Michigan. The area where 7 Year Bitch played consisted of a stage with a bunch of benches in front of it, and bleachers off to the sides and back of the bench area. There was a bit of room for a mosh pit of sorts between the stage barricade and the first row of benches, and this area was about 4 people deep. Seating was limited, so the area surrounding the stage was fenced off, and a hand stamp was required for admission. Despite a 7 pm start time, everything was filled up by about 5 pm, and there were probably a couple hundred people standing outside the fences so they could at least hear the music. 7 Year Bitch played under daylight.

Unlike the Chicago show, the Milwaukee crowd (at least the people up front with me in the pit area) was familiar with the band and a lot of the songs, so they were really into it. The pit got going early, and there was even some crowd surfing despite the space limitation. People were calling out song requests and cheering wildly, so it was a much better show in that regard.

Once again, the band opened with "Rest My Head." The rest of the set included "Crying Shame," "Deep In The Heart," "24,000 MPH," "Whoopie Cat," "2nd Hand," "Lorna," "The Scratch," "Hip Like Junk," and ended with "Miss Understood." As before, Roisin added some new guitar parts to "Deep In The Heart" and "Hip Like Junk," and she played extremely well. "24,000 MPH" was probably the best song of the performance. Selene seemed especially agitated, and she was really seething with venom as she glared at some young boys moshing near the front. She messed up the lyrics a little bit, and sang the part about "need[ing] a baseball bat" twice. People threw things at the band several times during the show, and Selene was hit in the stomach at one point with a plastic dinosaur. The person who threw it wanted it back, but she took it and placed it near Valerie's drum kit.

Overall, this was an excellent show, despite only lasting half an hour. The band seemed to be having fun, and it was great that the crowd was so into it. I wanted to go see some other stuff after 7 Year Bitch played, so I didn't stick around for Tracy Bonham, Spacehog, or Everclear. On my way out, I noticed the look of sheer amazement on the faces of some of the parents who had gone there with their kids, and it was pretty funny to see how shocked they were. 7 Year Bitch rocked the place apart.

Just saw them tonight. It was the best performance I have seen them give. I was especially pleased because they played Hip Like Junk and The Scratch from Viva Zapatta and they played Lorna, my favorite from the 1st album. It was also the longest set I have seen them play.
