Reviews from the November 14, 1996 show at Chilkoot Charlie's in Anchorage
Submitted by Rex (of Liquid Bandade fame):
Figured I'd drop a note on the two shows they played here in the 'Biggest small
town in the US' (self coined). As of the last year or so Eric Lizer from Up Concerts has been bringing REAL bands into out fair city. A nice change from
the usual. So far he's brought up bands like D.O.A., Agent Orange, Gas Huffer, and now
7 Year Bitch.
Just to make this quick, this show had the biggest turn out yet after all the
other shows from Up Concerts. 7YB did a fine, fine show even considering that this was
Lisa Fay Beatty's first two shows playing with them. I guess she did sound for them for
quite some time, so when it came time to go from in front of the stage to ON the stage
she was more than prepared.
Chilkoot Charlies is probably the biggest bar in the state. It's like a
Habitrail for red-necks. There are actually 5 bars under one roof with wood chips on
the floor and tree bark on the walls, but I understand they really cough up for bands
with a draw (free hotel, rental car, food, beer, etc..) and don't charge Eric for the
space. The atmosphere sucks, but when you get 300 people in there to see punk rock, it
doesn't matter.
I've never really been too much into 7YB in the past (which now I am kicking
myself for), but it would be apparent that alot of other people HAVE judging by the 500
kids that showed up at Gigs (max. cappacity 299!). Man! That place was packed! The
shows are always better at Gigs (the only all-ages venue in town) so, of course, this
one was also. I had a great time even though I got stuck holding one of the video
cameras they were using to document the event. The girls pulled it off without a hitch
and really seemed to dig the place. Some locals get so starved for this kind of music
that when it makes it's way here they just kind of go nutz. You can assume when they
were done playing all the set lists that were left on stage and posters quickly made
thier way to the band members for the usual autographs (la-de-da-de-da).
The only thing that kind of sucked was that there just wasn't enough time for
the local zine writers to do any interviews. I'm sure there's more to these people than
what you can or can't hear from the singer. I wish the vocals were a bit clearer on this
show just because I know they weren't singing about x-girlfriends! :)
But hey, they got to go to the zoo and pet the elephant!
I haven't even done that!!!
