A cop was killed and his gun was stolen. It was used for next murder case. Detective Kashiwagi who investigate this case got a testimony about perpetrator that "He walks like a dead man". Detective found a guy named Date who was a returner of Vetnam war as journalist. Date saw hell, then something broke in his mind... this movie has very difficult ending.
This story was based on a hald-boild novel. The author; same as Yomigaeru Kinfou; was a gun-mania and always created macho, smart, and tough leading character. Date (same as tennis player) was described so, too. Novel was written in 1958 and ciemarized next year, story was revenge of smart graduate school student. Now it seems old-fashioned, so Yusaku and writer Maruyama arranged a lot.
Yusaku and Maruyama were seeking for madness and darkness of Date's heart. Their keyword was "Man walks like a death (or ghost)", Yusaku felt he is too tall for Date because he had certain image of this character. He realized it was ridiculous idea later though. He changed his body by weight control and dental operation, like De Niro, and he was satisfied with his work.
When I saw this film at the first time, I couldn't understand their aim because it was beyond of my comprehension. After I read his interviews I could grasp the meaning vaguely. I watched it many times, then I found he accomplished incredible job. It was very experimental and close to art film.
