..ON THE X-FILES
The X-Files is two F.B.I. agents investigating paranormal phenomena,
something the F.B.I. has told me isn't done. There are no X-Files
as far as the F.B.I. are concerned.
...ON MULDER
Mulder is the believer - he wants to believe in the paranormal.
He has an incident in his past - he believes his sister was abducted
by aliens and that's what fuels him, it's part of his quest as
an F.B.I. agent and as a person.
...ON SCULLY
Scully is a sceptic - she's a trained medical doctor so she's
a scientist by training and thinks of everything...approaches
everything scientifically. So she is the sceptic of the two and
those two opposing viewpoints make for very interesting storytelling.
...ON PRODUCTION OF THE X-FILES
It's a lot of work - to write, direct and produce the show is
impossible. It's rarely done in television because it's just too
much work. So, I write about every third or fourth episode because
that's the way the staff is designed and the other writers take
care of the other writing, and every day we all produce the show
as well.
...ON MULDERISMS
Mulderisms have become a big part of the show and from the beginning
- the pilot episode - you'll see that he was a very wry character
and he has a certain way of hooking a hole in a very tense situation
with his humor. I think he does that very well both as Mulder
and David himself brings a lot to the character. He's very funny
- he'll adlib often and a lot of those adlibs stay in the show.
But it is written for him - there are funny lines written for
him. Mulder is a very - not sarcastic - he's a sardonic character,
and I think the character's pretty true to the character you saw
in the pilot episode.
...ON THE POPULARITY OF THE X-FILES
...ON WINNING THE GOLDEN GLOBE
Being nominated was a complete surprise. I remember calling up to Vancouver - which is where the show is produced - and saying we're nominated for a Golden Globe and I don't know whether they knew whether or not to believe me. So, it came as a big surprise to all of us, but a wonderful one, and also, to be in there with that group of shows that were also nominated was a huge honor in itself. When they said the X-Files at the Golden Globes I honestly didn't hear it, and I didn't see it - it flashed up on the screen - Iactually felt it and I honestly don't remember walking to that stage...I was transported up there. So I guess winning was kinda an X-File in itself.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
...ON SCULLY
It seems to be that both men and woman are attracted to the character
of Scully. I think it's an attraction to her honesty and her intelligence
and her passion about her work.
...ON SCULLY'S SCEPTICISM
Even though Scully has seen a lot in the past year and a half
or so, her background is in medicine and is also in science and
that's going be where her mind goes first in terms of solving
the mysteries and the crimes. She has much more of an open mind
in terms of how she can accept Mulder's ideas without jumping
immediately on him and saying, " that can't happen "
- she listens...she hears him out a while.
...ON SCULLY AND MULDER
I think the relationship between Scully and Mulder has changed
in that they're much more comfortable with each other - they're
much more easy going and Scully is certainly less sceptical of
Mulder and his ideas than she was before. I think that the characters
have been through so much together and they have risked their
lives for each other so much that they have this intense, thick,
unspoken bond that just gets thicker and thicker all the time.
They can yell at each other and argue and make jokes and know
that they'll always end up in a professional, respectful relationship.
...ON THE POPULARITY OF THE X-FILES
. I think we're all pretty surprised by the success of the show. I don't think any of us realised that it would grow as much as it has. I can't fathom how many people out there are watching or enjoying it!
