Esrange, located just north of Kiruna, is one of the most northerly located space centres in the world. From the humble beginnings in 1950, Esrange launched rockets for explorations of the atmosphere. The site was drastically expanded in 2003, when the Swedish Space Consortium launched their space program.
During autumn 2057 Esrange was the target of a terrorist attack designed to scuttle the Hakkapelle spaceshuttle carrying the AI Nidhogg. Only beacuse of the valiant struggle of the security forces at hand did the terrorists fail their desperate attack. Who was behind is still a mystery.
Esrange has several launching ramps for spaceshuttles, as well as a landing field. The old launch pad is still in use, for the unmanned utility rockets. These space rockets are loaded with the material needed for construction of the various spacestations and lunar bases being built. Even the rockets themselves are used for scrap metal in the foundries of the Lion of the North space station.
Esrange is also equipped with SOTA communication and control equipment, as well as laboratories and astronaut traning facilities for future missions. The sketchy plans of a manned Mars mission will require that many more utility rockets need to be constructed and launched. These rockets will then be sent to Mars, where the manned mission (Ares II) will use it for a prolonged stay on the red planet.
