The True Romance Page
The basic framework of True Romance is a simple one: boy meets girl, boy falls in love with girl, boy marries girl, boy and
girl run away to L.A. with a suitcase full of narcotics, mobsters and police catch up with boy and girl, mobsters and police
die, boy and girl live happily ever after.
The actual story itself is slighty more complex ... The boy is Clarence Worley (Slater, in fine form), a lonely young man, who
spends his days reading comic books, watching kung-fu movies and talking to dead rock stars. It's his birthday and he goes
to the movies to see the Sonny Chiba triple feature. In walks Alabama Whitman (Arquette), a young call-girl ... she's a
birthday present from Clarence's boss. They make love (obviously) and that night Alabama declares her love for Clarence.
The following morning they get married.
It doesn't take long for Clarence to be persuaded by Elvis (Kilmer) to kill Drexl, Alabama's pimp. The real trouble begins,
however, when Clarence takes off with a suitcase full of cocaine, believing it to be Alabama's clothes. On discovery of this
the couple head for L.A. followed by a trail of gangsters. The film climaxes in a shoot-out between gangsters, cops and
movie-producers bodyguards. Clarence and Alabama narrowly escape death and live happily ever after with their son, Elvis.
