When she was nine years old, Tomoe Hotaru went to visit her father, Professor Souichi Tomoe, in his lab. That day the lab erupted in a huge explosion, killing young Hotaru. Unbeknownst to her, her father made a deal with a daimon in exchange for her life. From that point on, Hotaru was possessed by the entity of Mistress 9 - the Messiah of Silence.
Because of the accident, Hotaru's body was frail and she was prone to fits of seizures. She also had the powers to heal wounds, which her classmates found to be gross. They kept away from her, and Hotaru remained friendless. She stayed inside her rooms most times, wearing dark clothes and collecting lamps, which cast an eerie glow inside her room. Because she is so sheltered and frail, she tires very easily.
However one day Hotaru made her first real friend. While sitting on a park bench, a hat blew past her. She picked it up and handed it to the small girl chasing it. That girl was Chibiusa. From there, the two became very close, helping and defending each other when the need arose.
However at one crucial moment Horau was not there for Chibiusa. As Mistress Nine slept within her, her father and the Witches 5 were guiding her to become the Messiah of Silence, one who will use the Holy Grail to cause the world to go into Silence. Needing pure hearts, Kaolinite finally gave the dark messiah what she wanted - the pure heart of Chibiusa. This one heart alone caused Mistress 9 to emerge, and for Hotaru to seemingly die within her.
But a glimmer of hope remained. When weakened, Hotaru used her own inner strength to defeat Mistress Nine and break free, killing herself in the process. This, however, lead to the rebirth of Sailorsaturn, the Senshi of Destruction. Stating that it was her duty to prevent the Silence, she dove into the heart of Master Pharoah 90 and did battle. Sailormoon powered up and went in after her, later emerging holding baby Hotaru in her arms.
She remained young until the day Setsuna arrived to take Hotaru to her destiny. The tiny baby was left alone on a rooftop while Uranus, Neptune and Pluto did battle with Nehelenia's Mirror Paredories. However the three began to falter and a parody went to kill Hotaru. It was then that the symbol of Saturn appeared on the infant's forhead and a large sphere of energy was released, killing the Paredories. The Outer Senshi were now floating in the air and gained their 'Super' powerups. Hotaru then aged to roughly four years old.
Living with the Outer Senshi Hotaru lived a seemingly normal life as a child when she was visited one night by the spirit of Sailorsaturn, who restored her past memories. She then aged once more, to her former age - thirteen. She then joined the Outer Senshi in rescuing the Innter Senshi from more paredories, and was the one to instigate Sailormoon's final powerup into Eternal Sailormoon.
The Senshi then travelled to Nehelenia's dimension, where Saturn was paired up with Chibimoon. The two went directly to the source and confronted Nehelenia herself. While Chibimoon was disabled, Saturn held off Nehelenia and told her she would destroy herself if it meant the evil woman would be stopped as well. She then used her Silence Glaive Surprise attack to distract Nehelenia, and attmepted to lower her Glaive. Chibimoon stopped Saturn from completing this, and Neherenia used this moment to trap Saturn in a mirror. She was later freed by Sailormoon.
Saturn doesn't appear again until she usues her Silence Wall attack to deflect bolts of energy away from the Inner Senshi. She then confronts Galaxia with the other Outers, but is killed along with Pluto, by Uranus and Neptune. She reappears in the finale with the other Senshi, and later sits in a car wishing on a shooting star.
ATTACKS/PHRASES
Sailormoon S (and up)
Power of Saturn - This is a power that Hotaru uses at various times throughout Sailormoon S. Its abilities vary, and it is not always voluntary. It times, the Saturn symbol will appear on Hotaru's forehead, and at times her eyes may glow. This power can do several things, including stopping a daimon in her tracks, setting a daimon on fire, giving a daimon a strong energy blast, and surrounding herself with a protective barrier. Baby Hotaru also uses this power in SailorStars to destroy Nehelenia's Mirror Paredories, and to power up the Outer Senshi into their "Super" forms.
Sailormoon SailorStars
Silence Wall - Saturn holds up the Silence Glaive and it creates an invisible barrier to protect her and others from attacks. This was used twice: once to protect a zombified Mamoru from a dark energy blast; the other to protect the Senshi from an attack by Galaxia.
Silence Glaive Surprise - Saturn holds the Silence Glaive in front of her, and it glows with light. A sphere of energy/mist then surrounds her and spreads throughout the area, distracting her opponant. This move was only used once, against Nehelenia.
Lowering the Glaive - this move requires no words. Saturn simply slams the Silence Glaive to the ground in order to release her powers of destruction. This was almost completed after distracting Nehelenia, but was stopped by Chibimoon, as completing this move will cost Saturn her life.
