On the prospect of another trailer, and extending the promotional campaign
Various news feeds from theatre managers have confirmed that the one-sheets and trailers are to be pulled tomorrow, and soon (estimates are January 22) be replaced by a four-to-five-minute trailer, as well as one-sheets that aren't as, well, focused solely on Anakin. In fact, there's a lot of people that didn't know that the boy was Anakin at all. And from a distance, I can tell you that the Tatooine texture isn't noticeable enough, and the "Episode One" text is a little too small. (And did anyone notice that there was no "The Phantom Menace" in sight?)
There's an enormorous cineplex down at the southern tip of the town, the Famous Players Coliseum, where they post all the one-sheets along the walls and ceiling. Remember that this is a three-storey theatre I'm talking about. I noticed the TPM one-sheet o nly because I've seen it on every website this side of Mos Espa. Next to all the other one-sheets, it just doesn't stand out.
As for the first trailer, I personally thought it was terrific. Never mind that some idiot at the local A-Channel television channel thought that Anakin was supposed to be some young version of Luke. (Oh well, you can't blame him for being inadverdantly ignorant... he'll probably enjoy the movie more because he has no prior knowledge of it.) The trailer was terrific, the only downside being the fact that "You refer to the prophecy of the one who will bring balance to the Force" has been ringing through my head over the last couple of months.
In the new trailer, what I'd like to see is more quick shots flashing by like in the first trailer, but I'm not sure if this will hold for a whole five minutes. I'd also like to see less focus on "Episode I" but more on "The Phantom Menace," which I believe is now possible due to the fact that many people know that the movie is a prequel by now. Same goes for the new one-sheet. My opinion still stands that the title is the title.
I heard something about the new trailer having more shots of Darth Maul. Now that would be fairly interesting. A few fleeting shots of lightsaber battles, perhaps? It worked quite well in the first one. Another idea is to add some original music to the trailer, instead of using old material from the trilogy, but that probably won't be possible because what I've heard is that John Williams won't be done before Feburary.
Well, despite my pessimistic views, I do believe that the November campaign was a great success for Lucas and company, and I wholeheartedly expect that they can do just as good the second time around.
