Nuclear Situation
NBC's "Atomic Train" miniseries is about to become a political cause celebre, perhaps. The May 16-17 miniseries, which stars Rob Lowe, Kristin Davis and Esai Morales, tells the tale of a runaway train carrying armed nuclear weapons and deadly nuclear waste down the Rocky Mountains.
Lowe reports, "I was just told that the state of Nevada, through its governor, is going to be taking out full-page ads in USA Today and other newspapers the Friday before the airing of 'Atomic Train' to call attention to the amount of hazardous material being transported through our back yards and the middle of our towns every day. Apparently, there's this whole groundswell of awareness on this issue that's starting to build."
Lowe says most people would be surprised at how much hazardous material is being transported through the country. "The only time you hear about it is if there's a disaster... and there have been a number of them. You can look at the headlines and read about entire towns having to be evacuated because of sulfur leaks and chemical spills... rivers being polluted... It happens all the time."
