The Winning Season
(TNT, TV-PG-L) On the surface, The Winning Season is about a little kid who steals the world's most valuable baseball card from an old lady with no money. Which, frankly, makes it sound excellent. Unfortunately, dig a little deeper and you uncover layer upon layer of sappy sentimentality. After pilfering a 1909 Honus Wagner card, 12-year-old Joe Soshack magically travels back in time to meet the Flying Dutchman himself (played by Matthew Modine). He proceeds to call Ty Cobb an "incredible dorkwad," while assuring Wagner that "you were totally awesome, dude." (Get it? He's from the future!) Soshack eventually get Honus to sign his card and finds his way back home, but not before inadvertantly helping to break off the ballplayer's romance with his fiancée (a parasol-toting Kristin Davis). It's not a strikeout, but then again, as far as Matthew Modine sports flicks go, this is no Vision Quest either. C+

I didn't think Vision Quest was all that great so this movie must really suck.
