From the October InStyle:

Heather Locklear
star of Spin City

What would prime-time TV be without Heather Locklear, who has portrayed such pop-culture icons as Sammy Jo on Dynasty, Officer Stacy Sheridan on T.J. Hooker, and Amanda on Melrose Place? Lucky for us, we won't have to find out. After seven years playing the scantily dressed, frighteningly devious Amanda Woodward on Melrose, the L'Oréal spokeswoman had been planning to spend some quiet time at home with husband Richie Sambora (of the band Bon Jovi) and their Z-year-old daughter, Ava Elizabeth. But she couldn't pass up the opportunity to play quick witted campaign manager Caitlin Moore on ABC's Spin City - a career move that will involve more than just a change in wardrobe. At 38, Locklear will be facing her first major comedic role, as well as her first time living outside California. Moving her family to New York City has Locklear both excited and a little nervous, but she's not worried about her first long, cold winter. "I figure I'll have faaaabulous coats!" she says. "Can you see me walking down Madison Avenue in my Ugg boots and my parka?" As a matter of fact, we can.
How would you describe your style? Stretch capri pants, tank tops and flip-flop. I also have a lot of Levi's. Every time I get ready to go out, I try on different ones and go, "This isn't right. This one's not right. Oooh, if I wear this, it's gonna rip right in the seat."
Did growing up in L.A. influence your style? I've always lived in the Valley. Being near the beach has made me so laid-back. Everybody walks around in tank tops in L.A. It's about hanging out in the backyard and barbecuing, so I'm always outside. It's more of a natural look.
What about marriage to a rock star? Did that change your look? The first one [to Tommy Lee] did, but not so much the second [to Sambora]. I think that had to do with the time - in the eighties, people wore more makeup, and then the style went more natural. Now I think it's going back to more makeup; I'll probably be back into that black eyeliner real soon. As for my look, it changes all the time. I look back at something I thought was cute and go, "Oh my God, that's awful!" And I have to see it on TV, which is really awful. Thank God for residual checks - that's the saving grace for having to look at myself again.
How has motherhood change you, mentally and physically? It's the sweetest thing I have ever done. There are hugs and kisses all day long. And somehow I have the happiest baby; think God knew I couldn't handle anything less. You'll do any thing for your cubs, and that's an amazing feeling. Your heart is just unbelievably full. And motherhood absolutely changes your body too. After I had the baby, I lost weight pretty quickly, except that my hips were wider. Now my hips are going back, but what's this little thing in front here?
What about makeup? Is it less important to you now? I don't even know if it was important before. It's always important when you meet a new person, when you're in a new romance. Then that kind of fades out after a year. I've been married almost five years, so at night I take off my makeup and leave in my retainer - how attractive! But I love makeup. I have drawers and drawers of it. You can't imagine what the area under my sink looks like. My girlfriend said to me, "You can't buy one more product."
What's in your makeup bag? I have Visiora PC 001 pressed powder, MAC powder blush in Prism, Aveda lip liner in Savanna, a Trish McEvoy blush brush, L'Oréal Hydra Soft lipstick in Bermuda Beige, L'Oréal Voluminous Volume Building black mascara, and L'Oréal Quick Stick blush in Iced Plum.
What's your typical makeup look? For everyday, I don't wear much makeup. I put on mascara, because of my light eyes, and maybe some blush, and that's it. At night, I add a lip liner, Putty by Valerie Beverly Hills - it's a great brown - then an old Chanel black liquid eyeliner. For lipstick, I use L'Oréal Rouge Pulp in Blushing, and, if I want to use a gloss, Highlights 18 by Trish McEvoy. I have about three drawers of beige lipsticks, but it doesn't really matter if I'm wearing any, because it just looks like my lips anyway.
What is your skin-care ritual? I wash my face with Sisley Botanical Cleansing Milk with Hawthorne for dry or sensitive skin, then I put on moisturizer by Sisley or La Mer, as well as sunblock, SPF 45. At night, I use L'Oréal Turning Point cream. I leave it on my face, and it exfoliates. The next morning, I get in the shower and just wash it off.
Do you have any beauty indulgences? I get massages pretty regularly now, because after I had the baby, I held her a lot on one side, and my muscles got all funky. I rarely get facials - I do them myself If I want to. My nails are done for work, and they look really great. Then the manicure grows out, and it's back to my own nails, which are awful.
How do you stay in shape? I've been working out with a trainer three times a week. I'm just starting to be conscious of what I eat, maybe because I'm aware of what my child eats. I've noticed that the more bread and pasta I eat, the more - it's not that I gain weight, but I'm just mushier, not lean. So now I'm eating healthier. At my dad's 70th birthday recently, I was looking at my two older sisters, and I thought, "They're so skinny. We're lucky we have great metabolisms."
Do you have any food weaknesses? I haven't had this in a while, but I love chocolate icing out of a can. And Taco Bell sauce. I love fast food - Monster Tacos from Jack in the Box and curly fries. I like plain hamburgers from McDonald's with french fries in the middle.
Do you like to shop? I love, love, love to shop! Then I look at the clothes in my closet and think, "Why haven't I worn these?" I'm saving the outfits for something special. Then a year goes by, nothing special happens, and the clothes are out of style.
Now that you've moving on to a new show, will you miss your Amanda look? It was fun to wear the things she wore, but sometimes I thought her skirts were a bit short. When I sat down and could actually feel my cheeks on the chair - that was a tad short. I worried not only about the camera but also about the crew [catching a glimpse]. I made sure to wear thick cotton underwear. Not that the crew cared.
Do you think your Spin City look will be similar? I play a campaign manager, so I don't think I'll be wearing short, short skirts. I don't want the same look. I'm sure they will come up with something great.
- Lisa Simpson

It's not appropriate for a campaign manager to wear short, short skirts but it's okay for an ad executive to? I wish. If all the female ad execs dressed like Amanda, I'd have never left the business.
