From the May Mode:

Taking it off

Celebrity buzz from the city that thrives on being hairless.
By Jodi Guber

For most of us, it's that time of year again: Summer approaches and we've got to get rid of all that unwanted hair. But for Angelenos, hair removal is an agonizing year-round experience that must be endured. Constantly engaged in one form of hair removal or another, L.A. girls have become experts in how to get it done, where to get it done, and how to make what's left work for you. You may be surprised to know that there is a trendy bikini wax (the Playboy version - use your imagination) and a passe eyebrow shape. But like everything else we wear, hair has to be just right. We start at the top with the eyebrows, work our way down our bodies to our bikini lines, and finally to our legs (and for some, even our toes). If all of this sounds exhausting, it is. So we decided to check in with a few of Hollywood's glamour gals to get their secrets and shortcuts for hair removal.

Rebecca Gayheart, actress
Gayheart's been acting for years, though she's best known for being the Noxema girl. Her beauty regimen begins with her perfectly accented Kewpie-doll eyes. "Starting with my eyebrows, I tweeze to get a better shape because I can't get as neat a line with waxing. I do wax my bikini line, though - it's the least painful process and shaving causes so many bumps. I shave my legs every day. I've tried electrolysis before, but it's too painful, expensive, and time-consuming."

Gina Gershon, actress
Judging by Gershon's star turn in the recent Gucci ad, it's clear that she knows just how to take care of herself. Gershon, who starred in David Kelley's series Snoops and is well-known for her role in Showgirls, swears by one beauty treatment that makes a clean, clear difference - waxing. "I've done it for more than half of my life and couldn't imagine stopping now. It's like a ritual for me." Obviously, Gershon's indulgences keep her sexy status intact.

Amy Michelson, designer
Even while dressing fabulous celebs like Kathy Najimy, Michelson manages to steal a little of the spotlight with her own Designer Bridal Collection. The line features elegant but bare dresses that complement her approach to hair removal. "I wax my bikini area constantly because I swim all year round," she says. "I shave my legs and underarms, but I am minimal about my eyebrows. I don't pluck; I prefer them natural because they're very light."

Lisa Rinna, actress
The sultry vixen from Melrose Place is nothing like her onscreen persona (she's really as sweet as they come). And no, her hair-pulling cat fights on television were not the inspiration for her choice of hair removal: "Being that I live in Los Angeles and I do what I do, I need to be ready for anything at all times. That's why I ventured into electrolysis - so I could be worry- and hassle-free. I also wax my legs because the maintenance is minimal."

Another reason why I'm glad I'm a man.
