Mulan at the Box Office

CHI FU: As part of my official duties, I not only get to hand out draft notices and write performance reports, but I also get to collect taxes. You know, all the really popular jobs. Anyway, that makes me extremely qualified to do the number crunching for the box office statistics for Mulan. The numbers aren't too bad, considering this movie stars a woman... [A rocket whizzes by and knocks off Chi Fu's hat] Ahem. I see some of you didn't appreciate that last part of that statement. Of course the movie did well. I'm in it. But I suppose you're here to see the facts, so...

Movies running when Mulan opened included The Truman Show, Six Days Seven Nights, A Perfect Murder, Can't Hardly Wait, Hope Floats, Godzilla, Deep Impact, and The Horse Whisperer. The X-Files opened the same weekend as Mulan.

Movies that opened during Mulan's run included Doctor Dolittle, Out of Sight, Armageddon, Lethal Weapon 4, Small Soldiers, Madeline, The Mask of Zorro, There's Something About Mary, Saving Private Ryan, Disturbing Behavior, Mafia!, The Parent Trap, The Negotiator, Ever After: A Cinderella Story, Snake Eyes, Halloween H20: Twenty Years Later, How Stella Got Her Groove Back, and Blade.

The opening of $23 million for Mulan was the fourth best debut for an animated feature in the U.S., behind The Lion King ($40.0 M), Pocahontas ($29.5 M), and Toy Story ($29.1 M). (More information about animated films is at the bottom of this page.)

Mulan was one of nine films that made $100 million or more the summer of 1998 in the U.S. The others were Deep Impact, Godzilla, The Truman Show, Armageddon, Saving Private Ryan, Lethal Weapon 4, There's Something About Mary, and Doctor Dolittle. (This is not the same as net profit--some of these movies cost more than others to make.)

All figures are in U.S. dollars.
