Mulan: The Megaparody

I love the film Mulan and enjoy working on the Mulan FAQ. However, I also am the writer and maintainer of a goofy little parody archive and simply couldn't resist doing some Mulan parodies. These are funnier *after* you've seen the movie. I'm planning some parodies on the songs from Mulan as well. Enjoy, and feel free to e-mail me.

The Mulan Trailer

Written by Angela Kuo (c) 1997
To the tune of "I Enjoy Being a Girl" from Flower Drum Song. Music by Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II.

[MULAN appears on screen dressed as a soldier]

MULAN
I thought I would join the army
And I'd give my dad's sword a twirl.
So come see the film to star me
As a boy, though I'm a girl.

A dragon who's cute and funny
And the size of a common squirrel
May help me earn Disney money
As a boy, though I'm a girl.

I'll prove I can win your admiration,
I'm tough and I shouldn't be ignored.
So if you attempt to hit my nation,
With a pound and a hack, my dear, you'll taste my sword!

Who cares if I'm male or female?
I have lots of ability,
So you'll learn from this Chinese folktale
'Bout a girl being a guy,
Mulan's a film to see!

Matchmaker

Written by Angela Kuo (c) 1998
To the tune of "Matchmaker" from Fiddler on the Roof. Music by Jerry Bock, lyrics by Sheldon Harnick.

MULAN
Matchmaker, matchmaker,
Fussy is she,
How will her plan impact on me?
She'll criticize how I'm pouring the tea
And I'll want to turn and flee.

For Baba, let me bring honor,
For Mama, let me uphold our name.
For me, well, I'll be a goner
If I mess this up I'll be burning with shame...

Matchmaker, matchmaker,
You think that I'm
Not quite the girl whom men desire.
Give me a match and I'll set them on fire...
"Dishonor!" you say. I'm a disgrace!
I'm such a klutz, and I'll lose face
Unless I can find my place!

Trust Me, Babe

Written by Angela Kuo (c) 1998
To the tune of "The Pepsi Song" performed by Ray Charles

Why Mushu doesn't have a Ray Charles send-up number like they planned...

MUSHU
You got to trust me, baby
UH-HUH!

Each Day I Practice Some

Written by Angela Kuo (c) 1998
To the tune of "Someday My Prince Will Come" from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Music by Frank Churchill, lyrics by Larry Morey.

Sing this an octave lower than originally performed…

MULAN
Each day I practice some
And soon success will come
For I work hard and constantly train
And self-confidence is mine to gain.

After I learn the art,
I'll play a major part.
No one can resist
A rocket scientist...
Don't you love a girl who's smart?

Huns, Huns, Huns

Written by Angela Kuo (c) 1998 To the tune of "Fun, Fun, Fun" performed by the Beach Boys. Music and lyrics by Brian Wilson and Mike Love.

MUSHU
Well, she got her daddy's sword and she rode to the big army camp now.
Seems she had made her decision when the weather was all chilly and damp now
And with a little red dragon she's certain to be known as a champ now,
And she'll fight Huns, Huns, Huns 'til the Army tries to keep her away.
(Huns, Huns, Huns 'til the Army tries to keep her away)

Well, the men don't know her 'cause she walks, looks, and acts like a guy now
(She walks like a guy now, she walks like a guy)
She makes the climb up Mount Ev'rest look simple and easy as pie now
(She looks like a guy now, she looks like a guy)
A lot of guys couldn't do it, but she's up there and sitting on high now
(She acts like a guy now, she acts like a guy)
And she'll fight Huns, Huns, Huns 'til the Army tries to keep her away.
(Huns, Huns, Huns 'til the Army tries to keep her away)

Well, you knew all along that your choice was a dangerous path now.
(A dangerous path now, a dangerous path)
And since you rode away on Khan you've been getting all your Ancestors' wrath now.
(A dangerous path now, a dangerous path)
But you should come along with me and forget about taking a bath now
(A dangerous path now, a dangerous path)
And we'll fight Huns, Huns, Huns 'til the Army tries to keep her away
(Huns, Huns, Huns 'til the Army tries to keep her away)
And we'll fight Huns, Huns, Huns 'til the Army tries to keep her away
(Huns, Huns, Huns 'til the Army tries to keep her away)

Northern China Girls

Written by Angela Kuo (c) 1998
To the tune of "California Girls" performed by the Beach Boys. Music and lyrics by Brian Wilson.

YAO, LING, AND CHIEN-PO
Well, Canton girls are hot-they're really girls worth fighting for
And the Shanghai girls with the way they talk, they always leave me wanting more.
The girls have hearts of gold along the Yellow River banks,
And the Beijing girls with their city styles-so very few can join their ranks.

I wish they all could be Northern China girls
(Wish they all could be Northern China)
I wish they all could be Northern China girls.

The Northern border's mountains are real high and rough terrain
I know the Gobi Desert is a barren, lonely place and it doesn't get much rain.
I've marched throughout this empty land and I have a heart to fill,
Yeah, and I would love to meet all of these girls-there are at least five hundred mill.

I wish they all could be Northern China girls
(Wish they all could be Northern China)
I wish they all could be Northern China girls.

Hun!

Written by Angela Kuo (c) 1998
To the tune of "One" from A Chorus Line. Music by Marvin Hamlisch, lyrics by Edward Kleban.

Why the Huns don't have a song...

One sinister sensation
Every little charge we make.
One chilling situation
Every village we take.
We're vile and we're gonna master the whole Great Wall!
Our army's spelling disaster and you will fall!
One moment in our presence
And you'll know that we're a threat.
For our troops will never let you run, son.
Here's a blank you have to fill in:
Who's our favorite Disney villain?
He's the…
He's the…
He's the Hun!

Send in the Huns

Written by Angela Kuo (c) 1998
To the tune of "Send in the Clowns" from A Little Night Music. Music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim.

SHAN-YU
Isn't it rich? Isn't it cool?
China with all of its land under my rule!
Send in the Huns.
We had a plan. We would attack,
But I had no idea how they would fight back.
Where are my Huns?
Send in the Huns.

Just when I thought we'd won the fight
Suddenly vict'ry was gone when a rocket took flight.
I slashed the soldier who fled from my terrible blow.
Next thing I knew, I'm stuck in snow.

This isn't good. This isn't nice.
Some Chinese soldier that I know will pay the price.
But where are the Huns?
Quick, dig out the Huns.
They're buried in ice.

Isn't it deep? Isn't it vast?
But snow will not break my stride-I catch up fast.
Yes, you'll see my Huns.
You'll battle the Huns.
It should be a blast.

Retreat

Written by Angela Kuo (c) 1998
To the tune of "Respect" performed by Aretha Franklin. Music and lyrics by Otis Redding.

MUSHU
What you want, Shan-Yu, I know,
What you need, you'll get I know it.
All I'm askin' is for a little retreat
Won't you go home, hey Shan-Yu, (Just a little bit, just a little bit)
Won't you go home, mister? (Just a little bit, just a little bit)

I ain't gonna do you harm, trust me, Hun,
Ain't gonna do you harm, unless you want it.
All I'm askin' is for a little retreat
Won't you go home, Shan-Yu (Just a little bit, just a little bit)
Won't you go home, yeah. (Just a little bit, just a little bit)

I'm the dragon Mushu, and I'm funny-
And all I'm askin' in return, honey
Is to give us a proper retreat,
Won't you go home, yeah Shan-Yu
Won't you go home, yeah.

Ooo, your death is gonna be yucky,
No cricket, so you're not lucky.
All I want you to do for me is give it to me
Won't you go home, yeah Shan-Yu
Won't you go home.

R-E-T-R-E-A-T
Find out what it means to me
R-E-T-R-E-A-T
Now light me Cri-Kee!
Rocket to me rocket to me rocket to me rocket to me
A little retreat.

Mulan

Written by Angela Kuo (c) 1998
To the tune of "Gaston" from Beauty and the Beast. Music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Howard Ashman.

CHI FU: Who does she think she is? That girl made a direct attempt on my life! Now she's done it! What a mess!
SHANG: She's a hero!
CHI FU: Disguised! Detected! An absolute dishonor! Why, it's more than I can bear!
SHANG: Listen--
CHI FU: What for? Nothing's changed. She's a disgrace!
SHANG: Who, her? Never!
EMPEROR: Enough! [Looks at MULAN] I've got to put this all together. [sings]

Now I have heard all about you, Mulan,
As you look humble and scared.
Chi Fu has told me about you, Mulan,
He has a long list prepared.

You stole your dad's armor as part of your plan
And worse things that I can recall:
Wrecked up my palace and posed as a man,
And Mulan, you have now saved us all!

Your reward, Fa Mulan,
Is a sword, Fa Mulan,
And I'm certain you're greatly adored, Fa Mulan,
And I also will give this memento,
Perfect to show what you've done.
You can ask any Yao, Ling, or Chien-Po
And they'll tell you which person defeated the Hun!

YAO, LING, AND CHIEN-PO
No one is like Mulan,
Quite a whiz like Mulan,
All the glory is "hers" and not "his" for Mulan!
It's a spectacle, yes, that's so liberating!
My, what a girl that Mulan!

She came, she saw,
She won, she could!

SHANG
Mulan, I must say that I think...you fight good.

ALL
No one fights like Mulan,
Reaches heights like Mulan,
No one uses explosives and kites like Mulan.
For there's no one as brilliant and brainy--

YAO
As you see she's got neurons galore!

LING
Yes, she once was an awkward young trainee.

CHIEN-PO
That's right!
But now she's the one we're all bowing before!

ALL
No one kicks like Mulan,
No one tricks like Mulan,
No one carefully chooses and picks like Mulan.

MULAN
Certain habits are never worth imitating!

YAO
Ptooey!

ALL
Wise words from Mulan!

SHANG
When I was a lad I would train every day
I would use a long pole to smash jars,
And now that I'm grown I see training does pay
Since this Venus fights better than Mars!

ALL
No one's smart like Mulan,
Does her part like Mulan,
No one captures and stays in your heart like Mulan
She is someone who's surely worth venerating!

Say it again
Who's this girl among men?
And then say it once more
Who's this hero of war?
Who's a super success,
Don't you know, can't you guess
As she finally rides home on Khan.
Once our kingdom was doomed
But a flower then bloomed...

LING
And her name's P-I-N...G, P-I-N-G...Gee... [YAO smacks him] M-U-L-A-N! and...

ALL
Mulan!

Don't Cry for Me Cinderella

Written by Angela Kuo (c) 1998
To the tune of "Don't Cry for Me Argentina" from Evita. Music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, lyrics by Tim Rice.

MULAN
It's the new Disney, some think it strange
That the new female lead is so strong
After being oppressed after so many years.
It's all quite simple:
I have a heart that is faithful and true
And also I'm blessed with a spine
In case the male lead can't come through.

Society is different, I had to change,
Though I held on to beauty and song,
I make lots of hard choices and I cry fewer tears.
I'm independent,
Smarter and tougher and talented too.
Yes, all of these assets are mine,
Just let me explain them to you:

Don't cry for me, Cinderella,
The truth is I'm just not like you.
I'm not like Snow White. I've changed my duty.
I've come a long way
Since "Sleeping Beauty."

I'm Disney's fortune and Disney's fame,
Role model for millions of girls,
And all over the world
I'm adored and admired.
I'm not so helpless,
I have shown I am active and do what I can,
My status improves all the time,
This girl is as good as a man!

Don't cry for me, Cinderella,
The truth is I'm just not like you.
I'm not like Snow White. I've changed my duty.
I've come a long way
Since "Sleeping Beauty."

Have I said too much?
There's so much more I can think of to say to you.
But all you have to do is see my film to know that every word is true!
