At the Fa house, Mulan peeks over a wall to see an official named Chi Fu and several soldiers on horseback.
CHI FU: By order of the Emperor, one man from every family must serve in the Imperial Army.
Mulan’s father, Fa Zhou, hands his cane to her mother, Fa Li. Fa Zhou limps over to a soldier and accepts a draft notice (a scroll). As soon as he takes it, Mulan calls out.
MULAN: Father, you can’t go!
ANNOUNCER [voice over]: Coming June 19th...
Mulan unsheaths her father’s sword, her reflection in the blade. She takes the sword and cuts off her long hair. Mulan, now dressed as a boy, sheaths her weapon.
Mulan rides her horse, Khan, out of the stable.
MULAN [voice over]: It'll take a miracle to get me into the army.
Flames shoot out from behind a pile of rocks and a silouette of a large dragon appears.
MUSHU: Did I hear someone ask for a miracle?
Mulan and Mushu cower behind another rock.
MULAN: Who are you?
MUSHU: I am the powerful [Flexes his arms], the pleasurable, the indestructible Mushu!
Mulan smiles in awed amazement--until Mushu steps out from behind the rocks, revealing a tiny, squirrel-sized dragon. Almost instantly Khan stomps on Mushu and squashes him. Mulan goes over and picks up the flattened creature.
MULAN: My ancestors sent a little lizard to help me?
MUSHU [now standing; swats her hand when she pokes him]: Dragon, dragon. Not lizard. I don't do that tongue thing. [He hisses and sticks out his tongue.]
Shan-Yu's hawk screeches as it soars over the charging Huns.
MAN'S VOICE [offscreen]: We’re under attack!
Shang turns to his soldiers.
SHANG: Prepare to fight!
Mushu dodges some flaming arrows.
MUSHU: We're gonna die!
Mulan's cricket, Cri-Kee, faints in his cage.
Mulan rescues Shang as they flee from an avalanche.
MULAN [voice-over]: I have an idea.
Yao raises his sword and addresses Ling and Chien-Po.
YAO: C'mon! We gotta help!
The three start running down the mountainside, backs to the audience. Then they stop in their tracks as the Huns come sweeping toward them, followed by an avalanche. The three immediately turn around (Ling's helmet does a nice spin in the air) and run back.
YAO, LING, AND CHIEN-PO: WHOAAA!!!
Mulan rides Khan with Mushu on her shoulders.
MULAN [voice-over]: Ready, Mushu?
Mushu has an enormous rocket tied to his back.
MUSHU: Let's go kick some Hun-ee bun! [He breathes fire on a wooden stick] Light me!
He hands the stick to Cri-Kee, who lights the rocket. Two people fall from a tower. Mushu blasts off. Fireworks display. Two men cower in fear.
MAN: Who are you?!
Mushu and Cri-Kee look as fierce as they can.
MUSHU: Your worst nightmare.
The dragon emblem and Mulan's name come together.
MUSHU [voice over]: Mulan!
Mulan sits on Khan, Mushu riding behind her. Shang is lying unconscious in front of her.
MUSHU [continuing]: You're the man! Well, sort of.
"June 19th" in gold letters. Blackout.
