Author's note: After learning about Karen Lewis's excellent Frollo website (at http://users.ox.ac.uk/~rege0015/frollo.html), seeing the campaign for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination, and noting her wish to see Frollo return in a sequel ("Hunchback II: The Wrath of Frollo"), I found myself faced with the following choice-- FROLLO: Choose me or the fire. Naturally, Frollo is a lot more interesting to write about. :) Since I have already done two Andrew Lloyd Webber-based parodies, I decided to do a Stephen Sondheim one this time around. So here it is, the piece de resistance... ------------------------------------------------------------------- "The Ballad of Justice Claude" [Scene: The "Hunchback" sequel (or if you prefer, a digitally inserted sequence in the original film). CLOPIN is surrounded by an attentive audience, with QUASIMODO, ESMERALDA, PHOEBUS, DJALI, ARCHDEACON, and GARGOYLES behind him. Sound of a church organ.] CLOPIN: ...And Clopin will tell you. It is a tale, a tale of the return of a monster... [sings] Attend the tale of Justice Claude. He's in a film that you should applaud. A man so evil he'd hurt the priest [Points at ARCHDEACON] And try to get all of the others deceased. [Indicates whole cast] He broke into the House of God, Did Justice Claude, The Disney villain named Frollo. QUASIMODO: He lived a life of sin and lust, He's filthy rich and so upper-crust. So what that he hoped his soul was saved? He blew all his chances by how he behaved, That Justice, That Justice Claude, That Disney villain named Frollo. ALL: Lift your sword up high, Frollo! My, you're standing tall! Don't you know that pride will go Before a fall? PHOEBUS: He's always mean, he's always cross, Unlikable, and a nasty boss. He tried to stab and he tried to drown, He tortured, tormented, and burned up the town. A cheater, liar, and a fraud Was Justice Claude, The Disney villain named Frollo. ESMERALDA: Unbelievable Frollo was, Full of evil his solo was, Rings on his hands, hat on his head, Frollo was someone to fear and to dread. Frollo plotted and Frollo schemed, Right in front of the hearth he dreamed-- ALL: Frollo is big, Frollo's a factor, Frollo is Best Supporting Actor. [The cast sings, overlapping lines and chanting "Frollo" beneath] Frollo is big, Frollo's a factor, Frollo is Best Supporting Actor, Unbelievable Frollo was Full of evil and low he was Right in front of the hearth he was Was Frollo! Frollo! Frollo! Frohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhllllllohhhhhhhhhhhh! [CLOPIN throws some powder and the puff of smoke becomes an enormous inferno in which JUDGE CLAUDE FROLLO appears] FROLLO [with cast echoing his lines]: Attend the tale of Justice Claude. He should be getting an Oscar nod. [FROLLO holds up Academy nomination ballots in his hand] FROLLO: They'll mark my words--or they will pay And we would attack them without a delay-- [A thousand soldiers appear behind FROLLO] ALL: For Justice, For Justice Claude, The Disney villain named Frollo! ['Course, the Clopin fans know that Frollo has some competition... ;) Side note: Frollo's "Hellfire" has a strong resemblance to Judge Turpin's "Johanna" from "Sweeney Todd"..."Sweeney Todd" has a great score and it is quite a show.]
