Dick Wolf, Kyle MacLachlan Sign "Invisible" Deal
By Michael Fleming
HOLLYWOOD (Variety) - Producer Dick Wolf has tapped Kyle MacLachlan to play the title role
in "The Invisible Man," a one-hour drama for the Fox Network's fall schedule. Universal
TV is producing. It’s MacLachlan's first series foray since he was twice Emmy nominated
for his role as pie-loving FBI agent Dale Cooper in David Lynch's "Twin Peaks."
The series was hatched by Wolf and Bob Crais, author of the Elvis Cole mystery novels.
Though based on the H.G. Wells novel, it will be set in modern day New York, where the
show will be shot (like Wolf-produced series "Law & Order" and "New York Undercover").
Donald Petrie, coming off the special-effects feature "My Favorite Martian," will direct
the pilot.
Wolf wouldn't divulge the commitment Fox has made to the series, but Universal Television
president Ken Solomon said Fox president Peter Roth is keen on it. "Peter's been open
about it being one of his favorite projects and has spoken about it as a series
commitment," Solomon said.
"It will lean creatively toward the kind of strong complex, realism that has made hay
for Fox with "X-Files" and "Millennium," Solomon said. "There are a lot of places on the
schedule for it, and clearly one is Friday, where it could be paired with "Millennium."
Or they could both migrate to another night."
MacLachlan plays a man made invisible by a scientific experiment gone awry, in which
the military tries to render troops and military hardware invisible. He's then pursued by
numerous factions.
"Let me reassure you, he's not invisible all the time, we've found a way where you can
see him for much of the show," said Wolf. "That was the big mountain to climb, but without
giving too much away, we've got it licked."
"The idea of being invisible brings about all kinds of possibilities," Wolf added.
"You're hidden, but nothing is hidden from you. You can see what people are really saying
about you when they think you're not there. Lo and behold, basically every paranoid
delusion you have is absolutely true."
Despite MacLachlan's quirky turns in Twin Peaks and the films Blue Velvet and
The Hidden, Wolf said the actor's best suited for a heroic role.
MacLachlan is managed by Addis-Wechsler’s David Seltzer, agented by UTA and lawyered
by Alan Wertheimer.
One Night Stand was released in theatres November 14. Kyle plays Nastassja Kinski's
husband, Vernon.
Kyle has been reported showing up in UK commercials in a series of X-Files like
advertisments for Vodaphone (a cell phone company).
He and a Scully-like sidekick are following up strange incidents which always turn out
to involve Vodaphone. The closing point of the advertisment is that something mysterious
happens as they leave, which they miss.
The ads have included:
- communicating with the other side (using a cell phone to talk to people in the
next valley) - as they drive off they miss the room with people around a Crystal Ball
- a "close encounter of the third kind"-like incident (actually a group of scouts and
a pizza delivery man) - as they drive off flying saucers zoom down and zap the delivery man
- a time machine (actually a Karaoke machine) - as they drive off standing in the road
is John Pertwee (dressed as The Doctor) who holds up a sonic screwdriver causing a set of
garage doors marked "Doctor on Call 24 Hours" to open letting out smoke in which a blue
light can bee seen to be flashing.
Some past Kyle appearances:
- A con-man named Jeff on an episode of "Magnum P.I."
- A corrupt undercover DEA agent on an episode of "Miami Vice"
- A killer broken out of death row on his way to Mexico who runs into trouble in the
desert in "Tales from the Crypt"
Out on video:
- Moonshine Highway
- The Trigger Effect---"It’s sort of like, 'Oh, there’s a power outage, isn't
that fun?' and then there's no cold beer in the refrigerator, and then the phone lines
are down," says MacLachlan. "When these things are removed, we're surprised at how far
we fall."
- Mad Dog Time, with an all-star cast
The 8/26/96 People Magazine reported, "A couple of my East Coast spies recently
saw sweethearts Kyle MacLachlan and Linda Evangelista registering their choices of linen
and towels at the ABC Carpet & Home store in Manhattan. Might a wedding date be
imminent for the engaged ex-Twin Peaks star and the supermodel? The store says it has
no registration for the two, at least not under their own names. The couple's reps also
deny there's a wedding date, with Evangelista’s spokesperson adding, "Maybe they're just
moving to a new apartment."
