November 26, 1996; page 44 by Sheila Steinbach

Spur-of-the-moment is Kevin Stapleton's decision-making style. From switching careers to getting married, the OLTL star who plays reporter Kevin Buchanan dives in headfirst.

He discovered acting after he realized that he was miserable at his job planning corporate recreational programs. "I hated working in an office, being in a cubicle, wearing a suit, being on the subway at 8 a.m.," he recalls, admitting that he upped and quit one day without even lining up another job.

Last May, Kevin upped and married his girlfriend Kally, two days after he proposed. "I made up my mind while we were on vacation in Key West, Fla.," he says. "On Tuesday, I asked Kally to marry me, and we did it that Thursday-right on a beach. It was a hoot. You don't have to wait there."

Although acting started out as a spur-of-the-moment whim- a women who lived in Kevin's apartment building and worked at an advertising agency offered to help get him work in commercials after he quit his "real" job-it soon turned into a serious pursuit.

"At first, I figured why not," he recalls. "At least I could tell my parents that I had something to do while I was looking for another job." But he quickly decided it would also behoove him to get some training under his belt." If she was going to get me a commercial, I thought I'd better know what I was doing," he says, so he signed up for The Neighborhood Playhouse's six-week summer course.

"After the first week, I was hooked, he remembers. "I said, "This is my life! They encourage me to express how I'm feeling and what I want to do, no matter how off the wall or bad it is- and I can get paid for doing this.'"

Kevin stayed on for the school's two-year program and continued studying his craft, while supporting himself as a waiter. "Basically, I was studying until I got this job, which meant 8 1/2 years in and out of classes, workshops, and theater labs," he reveals.

In 1993, he suddenly decided to try his luck in L.A." It was New Year's Eve, I had nothing to do that year, so I decided to go to Los Angeles," he laughs.

It was almost three years to the day when I got this job. It brought me back to New York, which is great, because if you're going to be doing a soap, this is the better place to be doing it. Plus, I really did miss New York," adds the New Jersey native. "After a year in Los Angeles. I had stopped hating it, but I guess there's place like home.

"So, I'm back and working, which makes me ecstatic."

Kevin likes his character. "He's in everyone's storyline, so I'm pleased," he says with a roguish grin. And the two Kevin's do have their similarities. But Kevin says that's not unusual.

Almost everyone on this show is more or less like their character, " he contends. "It's hard to do this every day and not be. Some people actually do that work their characters do. But while Kevin Buchanan is rich, I'm not. And I don't skulk after married people, because I'm married myself. Otherwise, everything is pretty much the same-except the clothes different. I'd never dress like him!"
