SCENE: Early December, 1995. Jagger and Karen's apartment in Chicago.
(Jagger is in the living room, sitting on the window sill staring out into space. Karen enters from kitchen, carrying a cup of coffee.)
Karen: Honey, I just made some fresh coffee. (Jagger doesn't respond. Walking over, she puts her hand on his shoulder.) Jagger, are you ok? Robin's going to be here soon.
Jagger: (Taking Karen's hand) I know. I was just thinking about Mike. It's so hard for me to accept that he's really gone. Maybe if I had gone back for the memorial service...
K: Stop beating yourself up about that. You had a concussion and the doctor said you couldn't travel. I just Thank God you weren't more seriously hurt in that car accident.
J: (getting angry) Sure, while I was sitting here with a bump on my head, my brother was dying and I couldn't be there for him. Or for Robin.
K: You know that Robin didn't want you to endanger your health. Neither would have Stone. You were there for him when it really counted. He loved you, and he knew you loved him, too. (Doorbell rings) That must be Robin.
(Jagger gets up, opens the door. Robin is standing there, looking pale and sad. Their eyes meet; they go to each other and hug. Karen comes over, and the three of them stand in the doorway, holding on to each other.) (Fade out)
(Later; Robin, Jagger, and Karen are sitting in the living room)
J: Robin, I need to know. Was he in any pain?
R: No, not really. He was on alot of pain medication. It was really very peaceful. He was even smiling when...(Robin starts to cry; Karen goes over, puts her arms around Robin) I'm sorry, I keep doing that. Every time I think I'm pulling myself together, I remember something else, and I can't hold back the tears.
K: There's nothing to apologize for. This has been so hard on you. I hope you know that you and Stone have both been in our thoughts every single day.
R: I know, and it means alot to me. (Turns to Jagger) I was going through some of Stone's things and I found something I know he'd want you to have.
(Pulls out an envelope from her purse and gives it to Jagger)
(Jagger opens it; it's a photograph, about fifteen years old, of two little boys)
J: (not taking his eyes off the picture) This is Mike and me in our backyard. Before our mom left. (Looking up at Robin, smiling, but with tears in his eyes) I can't believe he had this with him all these years.
R: I didn't know he had it, either. It was in his wallet. You were always with him, Jagger.
J: You know, except for the day I married Karen, finding him was the happiest day of my life. I had my brother back, and we were gonna get a second chance at being a family. (starting to cry) No more chances now - he's really gone.
(Karen walks over and takes Jagger's hand)
K: Gone, honey, but never forgotten. He always be in your heart. (Reaches over to take Robin's hand) In all our hearts. (Fade out)
Later; same day; in the kitchen. Jagger and Karen are clearing the table after dinner)
R: I wish you guys would let me help.
K: No, we're almost done. Besides, it's been a really long day for you.
R: Yeah, it has. (Hesitates) Um, could you finish that later. There's something I need to talk to you both about.
(Jagger and Karen share a look of concern, then sit down)
J: What is it, Robin?
R: I'm not very good at doing this, so I'm just gonna say it. I'm HIV Positive.
(There's a stunned silence. Then, Karen goes over to Robin and hugs her)
K: (crying) Oh, Robin, I'm so sorry. How long have you known?
R: (wiping away a few tears) I found out a few weeks ago. I didn't want to tell you on the phone - that just didn't feel right.
J: (very quietly, with a pained look in his eyes) Did Mike know?
R: (Pauses for a second, then nods) I had to tell him , Jagger. He made me get tested again; he said he needed to know, one way or the other. I considered not telling him the truth, but I was scared. Scared he would look in my eyes and know I was lying to him. The thought of that was worse for me than his knowing. Please tell me you understand.
J: Yeah, I do. But I know that was what he was the most afraid of. He wanted more than anything for you to be alright. How did he take it?
R: Badly. At first. He blamed himself. But I told him, I don't blame him. I could never blame him. I love him and whatever happened we were equally responsible for. I promised him, and I meant it, that I was going to live my life exactly as I would have before - to the fullest and for the both of us. (Jagger moves from his chair; kneels in front of Robin, takes both her hands in his)
J: Mike loved you with all his heart. You were family to him, and you're family to us. We love you, too. (Karen nods in agreement) Whatever happens, Robin, please know you can always come to us. We're all a part of each other's lives, and we always will be.
R: Thank you. Everyone has been really great and supportive, but hearing it from you means so much to me. (Hugging the two of them) I love you both, too. (Fade out. The End.)
