Very soon. Any day, any hour, any minute. Stone is fragile. Can't see much, but still looks out the window, and I tell him what's there: the city, the lake, light coming off it. He's sorry we can't go to the seashore, to swim with the dolphins. We can, I say. If we can have a house and children we can certinly have dolphins. In fact, I see a school of them, out there in the lake. He reminds me dolphins are sea creatures. I don't care, there they are, just off shore.
I take his hand and we plunge into the water. From one lesson he has become a strong swimmer. He moves ahead of me, turns back and laughs. I strain and catch up. The dolphins seem to be waiting for us. We swim beside them. A pair invites us to mount. We ride them briefly, joyfully, then plunge back into the water and keep swimming, together, way out beyond them.
