OK, so the wait is over. I've been receiving emails for years now with people who think they know the end of the joke, people who want desperately to know, and the people that know the truth. So the truth is this (according to the December issue of PREMIERE Magazine and countless emails I've received without physical evidence to back them up): I will paraphrase Sean Smith's stick-glued reconstruction of accounts of the making of TBC by those involved.
So what was the punchline?
John Hughes: There isn't one. That was the point.
Judd Nelson: I made the joke up. My line when I fall into the room is, "I forgot my pencil," so we were trying to work backward from that, but what joke would have that punchline?
So there you go, folks. Smith's article is worth reading if you're a devoted follower of The Breakfast Club. Its full of trivia, little known tidbits about the making of the film, and also outlines some of the scenes that didn't make the final cut. Check it out, its in stores now (Nov 16) and it has another influential icon of the '80s on the cover- Johnny Depp. Tell me what you think!
