"Oh No! I've Broken A Nail!"

The cries have been heard across the globe. Superman is changing his costume and his powers, and people are not happy. Everywhere you turn in comics today has people complaining that the NEW Superman is not as good as the old, and he should change back. Or how his powers have changed him for the worse, yet everyone seems to be missing the other part of the equation. what about Clark Kent? These changes have affected Clark as much as they have Kal-El.

With his powers now radically altered from what they were, Superman has been having a hard time adjusting. He caused blackouts and electrical disturbances when he first started to transform, and now he's got his powers under control thanks to the containment suit he wears. This adjustment has proven difficult and caused many problems for the Man of Tomorrow. Yet these changes have also caused problems for his alter ego Clark Kent. As Clark, Superman now finds himself as vulnerable as the next guy. No powers. Zip. Zero. Nada. Now this is something he hasn't had to face since he was a child. No longer invulnerable Clark has had to learn the old dodge and weave play when in trouble as he can no longer count on his powers to save him. It's not just his strength and invulnerability that Clark has lost but his speed, vision powers and the bio-chemical aura that surrounded his body. Clark now has to face the problems that everyday people put up with everyday. Bad breath, Body odor, stubbing a toe, hot plates and so on.

Now these changes don't just affect Clark at home but at the Daily Planet, with his old powers he could write his articles at super speed and never worry about missing a deadline now however his speed is that of a normal person and to Clark that's snail pace. His powers helped Clark land some of the biggest stories in Metropolis. Intergang would love to be able to take out Clark now that he is powerless as their assassination attempts only failed because of Clark's powers and abilities. The enemies he has made in the past as Clark have never been more dangerous then now. The visual effects that now accompany Clark's transformation make things difficult for him to change in public places where his super speed would have allowed him to slip away unnoticed. Clark does have super speed when he's Superman but first he must change and there lies his problem.

Before the change Clark was always super 24 hours a day 7 days a week. He always had his powers and for him they were a way of life. Now however things have changed. For Clark to have ANY powers he must make the transformation into Superman, blue skin and all, so now if he's not Superman then he has no powers. This breathes new life into Clark who must now stumble over the everyday problems that we all have.

Clark's loss of powers means that all the things he took for granted as a reporter like his x-ray vision and hearing are no longer tools for him to use. Now Clark has to hear about an emergency the same way we would. Unable to monitor the city with his hearing Clark now has to rely on the media for information as to where he's needed. But even things that we don't think about Clark now needs to adjust to such as body odor and bad breath now able to sweat and smell with the best of us it's small things like that which help these changes bring Clark to life just a little bit more.

However -- the status of his invulnerability makes things a bit more difficult for Clark then just smelling bad. Able to be killed in any way, Clark's heroics have to be a bit better planned as he needs time to change into his energy form. If his enemies were to decide to have a go at taking a shot at him Clark could well be killed by Intergang or any of the toes he's trodden on as a reporter. With exposes` on Morgan Edge and Intergang, Clark made quite a few enemies and with Intergang resurfacing and Morgan Edge a free man we could see some trouble in Clark's future. Once again Clark has to now watch out from small things like stubbing his toe or banging your head that never worried him before.

But surely the mental part must be bad. Imagine having your skin sensitivity reduced so that even the wind bothered you or have your hearing reduced so that you could only hear 10% of what you used to be able to. Unable to use x-ray vision or super-hearing almost leave Clark blind and deaf, and as for everyone who says that he is just a normal guy now I quote Jonathan Kent, "Normal for you isn't normal Clark, normal for you is being super."

So the next time you see the Man of Steel and think about the new powers he has gained think about Clark as well and the challenges that lay ahead in a land that for him is unfamiliar and hostile.........everyday life.
