The Encapsulated Reboot Legion

When I was asked to do a review of the exploits of the reboot Legion of Super-Heroes, I figured it wouldn't be too difficult because much of the information I needed already existed in my Legion fan magazine LEGION OUTPOST II. Because of the various comics projects I am involved in, plus the demands of being the owner of a fifty-year-old home in dire need of work, I realized I would have to limit my review to a chronological list of the adventures of the reboot Legion. In order to keep this feature simple, I am not including non-continuity appearances (like pinups in the DC Galleries, Elseworlds series like Kingdom Come, or Sergio Aragones' parody) or otherwise minor references (like depictions of Superboy's Legion flight ring in his own title) -- for those you'll have to refer back to the aforementioned LEGION OUTPOST II.

I suppose before I begin the reboot review, I should briefly recap the history of the Legion. They first appeared in a Superboy feature in Adventure Comics #247, cover dated April 1958, in which they traveled from the future to the 20th century in order to invite Superboy to join their super-hero club. Over the next four years, they guest-starred in the various Superman family titles, quickly becoming a fan-favorite. Finally, in 1962, they won their own ongoing feature, beginning with Adventure Comics #300. The developing history of the Legion was certainly rich and exciting, with each passing year adding to the intricate tapestry which was being woven. An entire universe unfolded before us, it was impossible not to be drawn in. Then came the Crisis.

The Crisis on Infinite Earths was a twelve issue maxi-series published in 1985 and 1986, its purpose to merge the near infinite multiverse into one cohesive universe. At least, that was the intent. Unfortunately, it didn't work out that way. Poor planning and a lack of good editorial judgment led to contradiction after contradiction. The one that hurt the Legion the most was the elimination of Superboy from the Superman legend. Superboy, who was Superman when he was a teen, was originally the inspiration for the Legion. A new back-story needed to be created. This led to the saga of the Pocket Universe. Now, it was explained, the Superboy that the Legionnaires had met was actually from a second universe created by their enemy, the Time Trapper. Good or bad, it did the job.

In 1989, a decision was made to suspend publication of the Legion of Super-Heroes for a few months, then return with a new series set five years after the end of the last one. In this new series, the optimistic future that had been depicted for thirty years was replaced by one of doom and gloom. At about that time, the creators of the Superman titles decided that they didn't like the Pocket Universe concept. The Powers That Be decreed that Superboy should be excised from the Legion legend. A time-warping event involving the Time Trapper wiped out the future, replacing it with one ruled by Mordru the Merciless. This was almost immediately replaced by yet another reality in which the hero Valor inspired the Legion, one in which the Time Trapper was replaced by the evil Glorith. It wasn't too long before the people over in the Superman camp realized that the Pocket Universe was an integral part of a number of major Superman storylines, and thus that universe was restored, with its Superboy now only a minor part of the new Legion history. Again, poor planning and a lack of good editorial judgment led to unnecessary confusion. This version, sometimes called the TMK or v4 Legion, lasted for five years. By the end of the five years, sales on the title had dropped significantly. Many old fans were turned off by the gloomy future. Newer fans were confused by the convoluted revisions and the constant references to minor aspects of Legion history. Many new concepts which were regularly mentioned, such as Black Dawn, were never explained. The series suffered regularly from good ideas that were poorly executed. In 1994, The Powers That Be decided that it was time to pull the plug.

The decision to reboot the Legion saga, rewriting it from day one, soon evolved into a tool with which all the continuity errors which had crept in since the Crisis could be cleaned up. A five issue mini-series called Zero Hour was the result. The universe was destroyed, then recreated so that it was almost identical to the one before, with only minor alterations made from the beginning of time through the present. The 30th century history, however, was completed obliterated. The Legion creators did an excellent job utilizing this plot device to the fullest, giving use what is commonly called the reboot Legion. As for the rest of the DC Universe? A clean and consistent continuity was laid out, right? Can you say "poor planning and a lack of good editorial judgment?"

What follows is a brief review of the publishing history of the first thirty-three months of the reboot Legion of Super-Heroes. I recommend to every comic book fan to give this series a try.
