Richard Grayson was born into the circus and at four years old became a premier acrobat along with his parents in CC Haly & Norton Bros. Circus. His parents died as a warning to the circus owner. Dick was then relocated to the Gotham City Youth Center where he first met Batman trying to escape. He was then adopted by Bruce Wayne. Bruce Wayne revealed his identity to Dick. Six months later Dick was on the streets as Robin, a name his mother had called him when he was younger. Eventually he caught his parent's murderer and decided to keep his role as Robin. (Robin Annual 4)
At the age of 18, after several years in the Robin identity he was shot in an incident with the Joker. (Batman #408, Secret Origins #13)
After this incident, the Batman informed him that he did not think it was a good idea for him to continue with his crime- fighting career. So, he left Wayne Manor, without Bruce and him even saying good-bye. He went on to Hudson University and continued with his Robin career, but dropped out after one semester.
He then joined up with the New Teen Titans, which gave him a new purpose in life (Secret Origins #13).
He then switched his identity to Nightwing because he didn't be associated with Batman anymore. (New Teen Titans 44) Anyways, after hearing the Batman has taken on a new junior partner calling himself Robin, Dick goes to check it out. (Batman #416) He then gives Jason his seal of approval for him to use the identity by giving him his old Robin costume. After Jason's death, Tim Drake fills the Robin role, Tim takes over the Robin role with Dick's permission.
While he was with the Titans, Dick proved himself a very capable leader. He had build a romantic relationship with fellow Titan Koriand'r (Starfire) and had a close circle of friends associated with the Titans that he maintained contact with. This changed when several team members were killed or extremely changed. (New Titans #71-83)
His life lost a large sense of stability, and to try and get it back, he proposed to Koriand'r. Their wedding was interrupted by the arrival of Raven's evil soul-self and her attack on Kory. With this, as well as pressure from the other team members to take a break from the leadership role, he stepped down as leader and left the team. Kory had been extremely adversely affected by the attack on her by Raven, and was undergoing her own examination of her life. This lead to her going back to Tamaran and cutting her ties with Dick. At this same time, events in Gotham were demanding his attention there, and with the loss of both the Titans and Kory, he moved back.
After that, Bruce Wayne asked Dick if he would like to stand in as the Batman, Dick replied that he would, but that he could never replace Bruce. A little while later, Bruce changed his mind and became the Batman again. (Batman 512 - Robin 13)
Sometime after that, Dick went to England to find Alfred, Bruce's butler, who had disappeared. Dick found Alfred and in the process stopped a coup to destroy the English/French 'Chunnel'. (Nightwing: Alfred's Return)
Shortly after that, Dick decided to retire from the superhero business but shortly came back with a vengenance after discovering that his parents may have been murdered by somebody else. This info was false and since then Nightwing has decided to stick around. (Nightwing 1-4 of 1-4)
Dick now centers his activites in a southern suburb of Gotham called Bludhaven. He moved there after a group of corpses washed ashore in Gotham Harbor and Nightwing decided to take the case. The city of Bludhaven is supposed to be darker and meaner than Gotham (as Dick learned after getting his ponytail chopped off), giving Dick a chance to push his skills to the limit. Dick later discovers that most of the Bludhaven police force is corrupt, with a few exceptions. Also, Detective Soames is a bought cop working for Blockbuster, the new mob boss in Bludhaven.

**This is going to get a little confusing, so take a deep breath and prepare yourself.
1. With the newstand version of the New Teen Titans/Tales of the Teen Titans series, there were three original annuals produced: New Teen Titans Annual #1, 2 and Tales of the Teen Titans Annual #3 (there was also a Tales of the Teen Titans Annual #4... but it reprinted the 1st New Teen Titans annual from the Baxter or non-newstand series.) Dick appeared as Robin in the first two, and as Nightwing in the third.
2. With the Baxter (or non-newstand) version of the New Teen Titans/New Titans, there were 10 annuals produced that Dick could have been associated with (there was an 11th as well, but that was after Dick left the Titans). Anyways, Dick did not appear in the very first one of these (New Teen Titans Annual (Baxter) #1), but did appear in the subsequent 9 annuals.
The problems lies in the fact that there were actually 2 different annuals titled New Teen Titans Annual #1 (from 1982 and 1985), and 2 different ones titled New Teen Titans Annual #2 (from 1983 and 1986). This is going to have to be clarified somehow.
First ad for the new Nightwing on-going is in Robin #33.
