Springtime Blues

Yes, another Batman film. Planned to ride the coattails of last summer's Batman and Robin, "Sub Zero" was delayed for release until this spring. A cold and blustery tale when we're tired of cold and blustery weather? Maybe, maybe not.

Picking up right after the Batman season finale "Deep Freeze", we find out what happens to Victor Fries after the fall of his ice kingdom. Surprisingly, he is living content in the Arctic, with his stereotypical companion, an Eskimo boy. Only when the intervention of a submarine destroys Nora's cryo- chamber, does the sinister Mr. Freeze reemerge as a threat to all.

Cut to Gotham, where we expect a dramatic movie entrance from the Dark Knight, only to be given a shot of him jumping on a car. The rest of this scene is well done, the teamwork between Batman and Robin unparalleled. Later, Bruce chats with Commissioner Gordon at a charity ball. In between Gordon's corny speech about his daughter, there are several shots of Barbara as Batgirl, kicking around the bad guys. Relish these shots folks, because it's the only scenes of Batgirl in the whole movie.

Later, Barbara arrives at the ball and meets up with Dick, who both hit it off and decide to spend the weekend together. In the meantime, Mr. Freeze finds his doctor friend in crime, Gregory, and persuades him very well in his cause. Their target: Barbara Gordon, of course. Only she can save Nora Fries.

To make a long and drawn- out story short, Barbara is saved from her kidnappers by Batman and Robin, with the self sacrifice in the end from Mr. Freeze to save his Eskimo pal.

In my opinion, this second release of an animated Batman movie has much to be desired. Too much dialog, very little Bat-action and a predictable plot make "Sub Zero" a miss among many hits in the Batman series. There could have been more scenes of Batgirl as well. But, in this case, it will have to do as a filler of lost years between the Fox and WB series, and also explaining the recent Batman episode "Cold Comfort.”

If you're considering buying this video as part of your collection, save your money. Kids' WB will air "Sub Zero" as multi- part episodes in May. Save your cash and tape those episodes. I found that out the hard way.
