She was born in 1957 in Brisbane, Australia. Her acting carreer started whilst at the Univeristy of Queensland and she made her way to England with a show being staged by English writer Albert Hunt in 1977. Janet stayed with stage work when here, moving into T.V. roles (including a small part in the Hammer House of Horror series) until she won the role of Tegan.
After leaving Doctor Who she appeared on stage and other T.V. shows as well as the film Murphy's Mob (in 1984). In 1991 she left acting to join and work for Women in Film and Television and went on to become a director of Marina Martin Associates, an actors agency.
Janet was married to Nick Davies, a Daily Mirror journalist, in 1982.
