William Hartnell was born in Seaton, North Devon on the 8 January, 1908.

Before appearing in Doctor Who, William Hartnell was better known for sargeant major type roles, appearing in several films. It was after seeing him in "This Sporting Life" that Verity Lambert cast him as the Doctor.
His real life grand-daughter appears in the More than Thirty Years in the TARDIS documentary.
He died in 1975.
During William Hartnell's run as the Doctor there were a number of famous guest stars.
