new talent: Breckin Meyer
He's appeared in two of the biggest teen movies of the '90s: Can't Hardly Wait (as the lead singer of Loveburger, the band that breaks up before its first performance) and Clueless (as Cher's lovable stoner classmate Travis). Now, Breckin Meyer tries the '70s on for size, with a starring spin in the new disco-era drama 54, named after Studio 54, the decade's most infamous nightclub. "It was a dream job," says Breckin. "I got paid to work with one of my best friends [Ryan Phillippe] and Mike Myers. It was a blast. The only downside is that my wife in the movie is Salma Hayek," he adds sarcastically.
But making 54 wasn't just one big party for the Minnesota native. Breckin happens to hate disco, and he's not a fan of nightclubs either, yet he had to spend almost 16 hours a day immersed in that culture. Dislikes aside, Breckin says the biggest challenge was beefing up his skinny frame so he'd feel comfortable in his busboy costume, which consisted of a pair of very short shorts. "I was pretty much naked throughout the whole thing," says the 24-year-old, who spent the six weeks prior to filming working out and going on a food binge to put on an extra 10 pounds. "My girlfriend hated me because I had to wake up and go get doughnuts to gain wait."
