Report on [never sold out] Capacity Infinity - Luna Sea concert May 30, 1999

written by: jai
note: Do not post this report in whole or part on any other page without asking my permission first please. Just ask and I'll probably say yes anyway, but I would like to know where it goes. For now, Sana's page and Yuka's page have/will have this report as well.

For a list of songs played, please refer to Sana's Capacity Infinity page (you can also find the list of official goods and other reports there ^_^)

note: I had heard that strong winds blew the set over a few
days before the concert and that it was still being re-built the
day before the concert! I heard rumors later that they were
thinking of cancellation, but I'm very glad that didn't happen!

I arrived at the subway station approximately 12:30pm where I
ended up meeting with Sana and Yuka. They introduced me to
many other friends of theirs. I was so excited over being able
to meet (and see!) so many other Slaves there! It was also so
cool seeing so many girls with box purses with Luna Sea
stickers all over them! What amazed me as well was that
everyone seemed to carry cell phones with them
(understandable when they're quite inexpensive - I saw SO
many different types and faces in stores in Tokyo), unlike
North America where they haven't become THAT common yet.

I was in awe looking at all the cosplayers! Actually I also
couldn't believe how some of them could stand to be in layers
of vinyl and velvet in the 25C+ heat! They looked incredible,
and they all allowed me to take their pictures, even posing for
the camera! I had seen pictures on the 'net before of
cosplayers, but it really is incredible to see them in person!
Their clothes and makeup were incredible!!! (What amazed me
was that my makeup had started deteriorating after 30 min. in
the heat while theirs remained immaculate for the whole time!
- I really have to remind myself to buy makeup in Japan the
next time I go, that stuff looks like it lasts!)

Anyway, we walked as a group to a restaurant to have lunch
at approximately 2pm. I think this must have been one of the
places to go for lunch near the Big Sight.

Finally at 3pm, we began our long trek to the concert site. The
way to the concert site was packed! I don't believe I'd ever
seen so many people before in my life! (The concert site is
approx. 30 min. walk from the subway station about 1/2-1/3 of
the way was just packed with people.) Around 3:30 pm I broke
away from the group to stand in the (long) line for concert
goods. Unfortunately they were already out of concert tees by
the time I got to the booth, however I still got a program and
poster (which is now hanging on my wall! ^_^).

Approximately at 4:15pm, I arrived at my block (E13) which
was about 1/2 way back on Sugizo's side. I decided to sit on
the ground as most people had. I knew it'd probably be the last
time I could sit before having to be on my feet for the next
several hours. The giant monitors (one of which was right
beside my block!!!) were displaying a constantly changing
"LUNA SEA" logo design, it looked almost like a screen saver
to me (I'd love to have that as a screen saver!). During this
time (approx. 4:45) Lana and Yen went to my block, and we
had the opportunity to exchange a few words before the
concert. Five minutes later, the whole block got to their feet in
anticipation for the concert.

As I was straining to see the stage, at around 5:15-5:30, five
black helicopters with the Luna Sea logo (the logo is of the
crescent moon with "LUNA SEA" in it) flew overhead (it flew a
bit lower over my section). I was again in awe. It was
incredible! The whole crowd started screaming the various
members' names. On the monitors, I could see Sugizo's pink
hair in one of the helicopter windows!

To my utter surprise, only one helicopter actually contained
the whole band in it! Sugizo was the first to get out, jovially
waving to all the fans! I remember seeing Inoran wearing a
long hooded jacket, with the hood drawn over his face.

The first song they played was "Loveless" where Sugizo had
his 3-head black scroll guitar!!! I was so happy because I love
that song so much!!! I remember seeing Ryuichi in a red top
with black pants... Shinya was in a black sleeveless top with 2
vertical stripes on it. J was in a black tee and jeans while
Sugizo was in a sparkle-y sleeveless jacket (top?) and his
usual black leather shorts and thigh high boots. I was so
happy when I saw that Sugizo used his white 'scroll' guitar!!!
He hadn't used that in YEARS!!! (later in the concert he
attempted to throw this guitar to the crowd, but he didn't throw
it far enough and it landed on the grass in front of the stage.
^_^;) Sugizo also used his usual black ESP guitar and his
bright mixed media guitar (the silver one). For Ryuichi, I was
pleasantly surprised when I saw his face on the monitors! He
had this 'dark' expression on his face reminiscent of the older
Ryuichi from around "Image" to "Mother" eras!!! He even kind
of 'crossed' his eyes a bit. (Reminded me of Kyo from Dir en
grey, but of course nowhere near as exaggerated as Kyo.)

Right before the last song of the first costume change, Ryuichi
said to the audience, "May the Force be with you." It took a
few moments for it to register in my mind that Ryuichi had
actually said that, but when it did I started grinning and
laughing so much!!! Before my trip to Japan, I watched
SW:TPM on the opening weekend (Yes, I'm also a sci-fi
freak...), and it was so cool to hear that line from him!!! ^_^

As usual, during Shinya's long drum solo, he wanted us to
keep shouting his name before he'd continue playing! It was
so cool again!!! I screamed out "Shinya!!!" along with
everyone else! After a while, J came out and hugged Shinya
and proceeded to play the drums with Shinya!!! It was so
adorable!!! J was actually pretty good! I guess being the
bassist, he also has a very good sense of rhythm. J would
also stop playing the drums unless we shouted out his name
(which we did! ^_^). Afterwards, J went on to pick up his bass
and he and Shinya had their drum and bass solo! I was
giggling like an idiot again when people in my block began
cheering "J!!! J!!!" at the same time waving "the finger" around
at him!!!

After the drum and bass solo, the whole band came out again
and played "G" (I think). I think Inoran was wearing a leopard
print jacket (like J's during "Mother" and Sugizo's in the "Storm"
PV). J I think changed into a black tank top. Ryuichi had an all
black leather outfit and Sugizo changed into a pink top (looked
like a pink life vest? ^_^;) and kept the boots and shorts.

For the Ryuichi/Sugizo moments... (of course there were
some!!! I SCREAMED during these! ^_^;) During "Believe",
Ryuichi put his arm around Sugizo and again during "Desire"!!!
In "Desire" when Ryuichi has his arm around Sugizo, Sugizo
leaned in really close and whispered something into Ryuichi's
ear! Ryuichi grinned afterwards! ^_^ ^_^ ^_^

During one of the encores, Sugizo came out on stage with his
Star Wars toys!!! Again, I was laughing so much!!! I thought
this was utterly adorable, and I cracked up when Sugizo put
the Comm Tech (voice chip decoder) up to the microphone,
playing "Hi, I'm Anakin Skywalker" (or something like that). A
few moments later when Ryuichi began talking into the
microphone, Sugizo played lightsaber sound effects!!! I was
grinning ear to ear again!

Two times between the encores, we all sang happy birthday
to Ryuichi over and over!

In another encore, Ryuichi came out first in a LOUD BRIGHT
pink shirt (think: sparkle-y hot pink Hawaiian shirt)! At first I
thought it was Sugizo because of the hot pink! He introduced
Shinya, J, Inoran and then finally Sugizo! I WISH I could
understand what they all said, but I couldn't (gee, I could only
catch about 1-2 words every few sentences so obviously I
couldn't understand anything they said at the concert. ;_;).
Anyway, Shinya said something to Ryuichi as he was
introduced, and then Shinya must have commented on
Ryuichi's shirt because Shinya went and covered Ryuichi up
with the concert towel! ^_^;;; When J came out, he laid the
towel out in front of a low speaker and Ryuichi followed suit.
When Inoran came out, Inoran said something to Ryuichi and
walked to his side with the CUTEST, biggest smile on his face!
I wanted to hug him so badly because he looked so adorable!
When Sugizo came out he also said something to Ryuichi... At
this time I think Sugizo was wearing his pink rug vest open
with of course those endearing boots and shorts! (ack! I can't
remember if Sugizo had another outfit between this and the
other pink top! sorry! ^_^;)

Hmm, I don't remember if this was during the same encore, but
there was one part where Sugizo looked to be putting his
hands together and bowing over and over to Ryuichi (???). It
was cute! ^_^; Also, as Ryuichi was talking to the audience,
Sugizo went up behind Ryuichi and slowly draped his arms
over Ryuichi's shoulders and (I think) made body contact! The
crowd was just screaming at this part! I think this encore had
"Wish" which is one of my fave songs! There weren't any
streamers though...

The last encore was "I For You" (I sang along even though I'm
sure my pronunciation was bad! ^_^;). I think this was when
Sugizo came out with that (now famous) camera of his and
took lots of pictures of himself! ^_^ Ryuichi came out in tight
black leather pants and an open loose black long sleeved
shirt, which he quickly discarded! ^_^ ^_^ ^_^ I kept staring at
the giant monitor beside my block each time it did a close up
of Ryuichi because I wanted to see his arm, and all those
tattoos were there!!! I couldn't see too clearly on the giant
monitor but whoa, you REALLY could see those tattoos!!! I
was SO happy because I think this is the first time since about
1993 that Ryuichi exposed his arm to the fans again!

The concert ended at 8:45pm with fireworks. Inoran was so
cute again, looking up at the fireworks in awe and watching
like a little child!!! ^_^ ^_^ ^_^ After, the 5 of them got together
as usual, linked hands and took a giant leap/bow to the
audience. Afterwards, Ryuichi and Inoran left. J, Shinya and
Sugizo were throwing stuff to the crowd. J said "good night!"
then left... Shinya threw a LOT of drumsticks to the audience
and Sugizo was throwing water bottles out! Sugizo was the
last to leave the stage, he screamed into the microphone
"Tokyo!!!" and other stuff I couldn't understand. ^_^; He was
FLAMMING!!! ^_^ ^_^ ^_^ After, Sugizo walked to the middle of
the stage and took a very long and deep bow (like what he did
in the Tokyo Dome End of Period concert of Xmas '98).

At the end of the concert, piano version of various Luna Sea
songs were played while messages in English scrolled on the
monitor from each member. They were very touching. I think
Ryuichi's mentioned something about 10 years, Sugizo talked
about the children of the world, how he will continue to fight
and how Luna Sea means to him. It was so very touching!
Inoran's was surprisingly long and very touching, also
mentioning what Luna Sea is to him. I don't remember if it was
J's or Shinya, but they shared a similar sentiment to the
others, that Luna Sea is very important to them, and one
particular line said something like "Luna Sea is with me until I
die." I thought this was all so moving and I got a bit emotional.
^_^;

Finally the concert ended and 100,000 people had to be
evacuated from the venue. Not an easy task as each section
was let out one by one. It was 9:45 by the time my section
was allowed to leave and I walked again the 1/2 hour back to
the subway station. Stopping into a convenience store on the
walk from the last subway station stop to my hotel for dinner, I
finally arrived at my hotel room at 11:30pm, completely
exhausted, but ecstatic from one of the most memorable days
in my life! Thank you to all the people I met at the concert,
friends and new friends, and of course to Luna Sea! I'll
remember this wonderful day, always!
