Cooper is drawn to the quiet solitude of the town and its surroundings, despite the circumstances surrounding his arrival. But he too hides a dangerous secret - his ex-partner who holds a deady grudge.
Sheriff Harry S. Truman (Michael Ontkean) on the other hand is very down-to-earth. He has become good friends with Special Agent Dale Cooper over the course of this investigation and come to respect the spiritualism related to it. He is one of the "Bookhouse Boys": a group who protect the town from other forces.
His personal connection to the underside of Twin Peaks is his relationship with Josie Packard, who may not be what she appears to be...
Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee) was first seen by audiences floating down a river, dead, naked, and wrapped in plastic. Throughout the course of the television series, Laura's character was slowly revealed, finally shown to us in "person" in the movie Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me. We learned that Laura was a cocaine addict and that she spent much of her time trying to corrupt those around her, as she saw no hope in the world. It was only the "good" Dale trapped in the Lodge that helped Laura resist the temptations of the evil "BOB".
She was a picture of torment, torn between corruption and salvation. Both sides of the conflict tried to claim her, with tragic consequences.
Audrey Horne (Sherilyn Fenn) is the daughter of businessman
Benjamin Horne, owner of the Great Northern Hotel. Although she didn't know Laura Palmer very well, Audrey says she feels close to her (Laura helped look after Audrey's catatonic brother, Johnny). Audrey fell in love with Special Agent Dale Cooper and
took it upon herself to aid in the investigation, in the hope that it would attract his attention.
Leland Palmer (Ray Wise) is the father of Laura. When she died, he was overcome with grief and went almost insane. He often began dancing at the most inappropriate times, sometimes with a picture of Laura, sometimes just with an imaginary Laura. Overnight one night, his hair turned gray - completely. His bizarre behavior almost ruined a deal that Leland's boss, Ben Horne, was trying to seal with some Icelandic investors. His insanity (or perhaps something else...) drove him to smother the suspect in Laura's murder, Jacques Renault.
Leland's past provides an important clue as to the identity of Laura's murderer. Who was Mr Robertson?
Wife of drug-pusher Leo Johnson, Shelley (Madchen Amick) has had a hard life, often being beaten by her husband. Since the death of Laura Palmer, Bobby Briggs, former boyfriend of Laura's, has taken up with her. The two have tried, unsuccessfully, a number of times to kill Leo Johnson.
When Mr Johnson was brain-damaged, the two entered into a scheme to get insurance money for themselves.
Dr Lawrence Jacoby (Russ Tamblyn) is a psychiatrist who had Laura as a secret patient. He had also fallen for her and was sent secret diary-tapes from Laura. He was attacked by BOB from behind when being tricked by James Hurley and Donna Hayward into thinking that Laura was still alive.
The only doctor with 3-D specs as glasses, Jacoby also aids Ben Horne when he loses his mind, and helps couples like Ed and Nadine.
Albert Rosenfield (Miguel Ferrer) is an FBI agent with no sense of manners whatsoever. He is blunt and often rude, infuriating those unused to his demeanor. His life philosophy, however, according to him revolves around love. Everything he does is for love. He helped with Laura's autopsy and is also aware of the strange goings-on in Twin Peaks. His theory is that perhaps BOB is the evil that men do.
The Little Man From Another Place (Michael John Anderson) is one
of the more bizarre characters in Twin Peaks. He is a resident of the Lodges, a place that exists on a different plane from our world. It is unclear whether he is from the Black
Lodge or the White (see my theories) but he is definitely helping Cooper to discover the murderer of Laura Palmer. He appears in Cooper's dreams, giving him enigmatic clues in a strange-sounding voice. He has only ever been seen in the Red Room.
"Killer Bob" (Frank Silva), or "BOB", is not to be confused
with Bobby Briggs, boyfriend of Laura Palmer. This BOB is from the Black Lodge. The former familiar of Mike (now the One-Armed Man), he was set free when Mike saw the Face of God and cut
off his own arm. Now BOB roams the earth, killing for pleasure and feeding off of fear. As early as the 4th regular episode (#1003), or the pilot if you saw the European version, we learn that BOB was Laura's killer. However, the mystery of WKLP continues as the investigators try to discover whose body BOB was inhabiting at the time (for BOB to possess someone, they must first be willing). He (and perhaps other lodge members -see FWWM, the Philip Gerard scene) can be detected by their odor: they give off a scent like that of burning oil.
