Where the wave of moonlight glosses
The dim grey stands with light,
Far off by the furthest Rosses
We foot it all the night,
Weaving olden dances,
Mingling hands and mingling glances
Till the moon has taken flight;
To and fro we leap
And chase the frothy bubbles,
While the world is full of troubles
And is anxious in its sleep.
Come away, O human child!
To the waters and the wild
With a faery, hand in hand,
For the world's more full of weeping
than you can understand.
- W.B. Yeats, 1889
Think for a moment, what is your imagined image of a Faery?
Is it male of female? What color is her hair? How tall is she? Is she a child, a maiden,
or older?
Your personal image of a Faery can tell you your ideals of a mystical realm. With more knowledge
about Faeries and how you can incorporate them into your life, your Faery image can become clearer.
The Medieval Faery is from Arthurian Times. Tales of sorcery and magick, being accomplices to Wizards and Witches
of the time. These Faeries were depicted as beautiful maidens with long, flowing red hair. A good example would be the
maidens in William J. Waterhouse's painting such as "La Belle Dame sans Merci".
The Elizabethan Faery age was when faeries were thought of as mischevious beings always causing trouble to the mere
mortals. These faeries were either goblin-like, or small flower faeries, which became the modern-day icon of the "Fairy".
The Jacobean Faeries were much like the Elizabethan Faeries except more emphasis was put on their
smallness. They were supposedly so small no one would ever be able to see them. Like dust. Possibly even invisible. To be
called upon when looking for something, material or spiritual, that you just cannot seem to find.
The Flower Faery were the gentle spirits that were found by fertile lakes and streams and deep into the woods
in flower rings. They were generous beings that didn't like those greedy mortals that stole from others
or gathered every last grain from their fields, or left fruit trees bare. To be called upon to stop greediness.
Finally, the Devas. These faeries were more like glowing masses of light that secretly aided the mortals
in healing by use of the plants. An expression of the Divine Energy to be called upon when in need of healing.
