The Pentacle
The pentacle, a five pointed star with a circle surrounding it, is a very important symbol to every Witch. It means different things to different Witches, but it still holds more power than any other symbol. It represents the 5 elements; Earth, Air, Fire, Water, and Spirit, bound together. It is a symbol of protection and it reaffirms the Witch's belief, much like the crucifix does for the Christian.
Each point has a designated element. The lower left being Earth, upper left being Air. The lower right is Water, and the upper right is Fire. On the top is Spirit. Again, the great amount of power that comes from this symbol is much a result of what it represents.
The reversed pentacle has gotten a negative reputation due the the "satanists" and "devil-worshippers" adopting it. What it actually represents is the 5 elements, only that the element Spirit is part of everyday life. On the upright pentacle, Spirit is placed on top and above the rest. Spirit is seen as another part of "matter" in this sense, when it is reversed. In some traditions, the reversed pentacle is also a symbol of 2nd degree standing in a coven. But, all in all, the reversed pentacle has absolutely no bad or evil connotations to the Witch, nor should it to anyone else.
