Warsaw varsity wrestlers came away with five undefeated individuals in the Tiger Classic on Saturday. Fort Wayne’s Eastside went undefeated in team competition to win the event.
The Tigers settled for a 2-2 team record in this first test of the season, narrowly losing to Kokomo (39-41) and bowing to Eastside (33-45).Ê
Warsaw soundly trounced Tippecanoe Valley (61-16) and crunched Triton (64-15).
The three area teams are for the most part quite young and inexperienced. Triton in particular has no senior wrestlers and only two juniors. The remainder of the team comprises freshmen and sophomores.Ê
Veteran coach Sam Davis of Triton reports that he was quite happy with the performance Saturday. “For several of our boys it was their first wrestling experience. To go from nothing to varsity competition is a pretty good jump.”
Three Triton wrestlers went 3-1 on the day. At 112 pounds, sophomore Eric Lemler lost only one match, a close 13-12 decision to Kokomo senior Mark Hodson. At 189, Lee Ulmer, also a sophomore, was handed his lone loss by Eastside’s Bruce Blaker. Ryan TrieschmanÊ (275) lost only to Joey Navarro of Warsaw.
Tippecanoe Valley has only two seniors, including Fred Borges from Brazil, South America, with no prior involvement in wrestling. Nathan Shewman, a junior, is the only team member with wrestling experience prior to high school.Ê More than half of the Valley starters are freshmen and sophomores. The Valley coaches left pleased with the hard work and effort shown by the team.
Warsaw continues to build, after losing six starters from last year to graduation.Ê The Tigers are led by two seniors, Isaac Perry (160) and Joey Navarro (275).
“The team is young and inexperienced,” said Warsaw coach, Tony Boley, “even the juniors.”Ê Among the starters on Saturday were three freshmen and six sophomores.
Since last year the Tigers have worked hard, with many competing in the free-style season, most attending wrestling camps and participating in other sports, as well as spending time in the weight room.Ê The hard work showed in that five Tigers came through the day with perfect 4-0 records.
At 103 pounds, sophomore Anthony Boley won all of his matches with falls. Three falls were in less than one minute.Ê He nailed Valley’s Ben Vanlaningham in 53 seconds, Triton’s Justin Scott in 16 seconds, and Eastside’s Donny Dennis in 44 seconds.Ê Kokomo senior Mike Hodson was the toughest match for Anthony.Ê Hodson was ahead 10-8 going into the final period, but was pinned by Boley at 4:30.
Isaac Perry (160) was awarded a forfeit against Kokomo and won his other three matches rather convincingly with first period pins. Perry crunched Rhyan Engle of Valley in 12 seconds, then he took Eric Williamson of Triton to the mat in 45 seconds.Ê Against Eastside’s Josh Otis, Isaac scored a flurry of points.Ê
He grabbed a quick takedown to open the match and then allowed his opponent
to escape in order to score another takedown.Ê (Such an intentional release
is called “cutting.”)Ê After the second takedown Perry put Otis on his back
to score another two points.Ê Finally, after cutting and taking down Otis
three more times in less than twenty seconds Isaac finished with a solid pin
at 1:21.
ÊÊÊ At 171, Richard Wolfe, a junior was undefeated for the day, with two
pins.Ê Bryan Long of Valley was pinned in 1:00 and Danny Snyder of Eastside
went down at 2:50.Ê Finally Richard outlasted Terry Coy of Kokomo with a 9-5
victory by decision and against Triton, Wolfe was awarded the win by
forfeit.
ÊÊÊ Kris Hueber has moved up from 171 pounds last year to the tough
215-pound class this season.Ê He showed good strength in this bigger class
with three pins.Ê Valley’s Jake Long was his first victim at :49 and against
Triton, Hueber was awarded a forfeit.Ê Kris outscored Kokomo’s Danny Duke at
the end of two periods 13-0.Ê Going into the third period, if he could score
two more points the match would end in a “Tech Fall” for Hueber.Ê Kris
finally scored a takedown, but immediately took Duke to his back to earn
another pin at 5:36.Ê In his match against Eastside’s Bruce Blaker, Hueber
again went into the third period to get his third pin with only two seconds
remaining at 5:58!
ÊÊÊ Joey Navarro returns to the Tiger 275-pound class after reaching the
State Finals last year.Ê Over the summer Navarro put in his time with a
28-day wrestling camp.Ê Along with a forfeit against Valley, Joey grabbed
three falls.Ê Ryan Trieschman of Triton fell at 1:21 and Kokomo’s Derek
Donnelson was taken down three times in the first minute of the match and
then pinned at 1:10.Ê Against Cody Mitchener of Eastside Navarro was unable
to score a takedown in the first period but in the second period after
releasing Mitchener, Joey took him to the mat for a takedown and then
squeezed a fall at 3:35.
ÊÊÊ At 112 pounds, Sophomore Tanner Connealy came away with two wins and two
losses.Ê Connealy’s wins included an 11-5 decision of Eastside senior Bill
Albertson and a 19-6 major decision over Lance Bailey of Valley.ÊÊ Freshman
Chris Riley lost three matches, but wrestling at 119 against Triton’s Rusty
Heckaman, Riley won by a fall at 3:36.
ÊÊÊ Freshman Daniel Harter (125) stepped in for an injured John Milton and
came away with a 3-1 record including two forfeits.Ê Although he lost to
Clint Stemen of Eastside, Harter was able to defeat Triton’s Nathan Vining
in a 10-2 major decision.Ê Sophomore Adam Bott had two losses and one win
along with a forfeit.Ê Bott earned his win by pinning Kevin Day of Valley in
1:46.
ÊÊÊ Sophomores Nick McKinley and Adam Galvin took turns at 152 pounds.Ê
McKinley pinned Fred Borges of Valley at :45 then after outscoring Chad
Bradley of Triton, McKinley won by a fall at 2:35.Ê Galvin was narrowly
edged out by Eastside’s Chris Patton in a 7-8 decision.Ê Gabe Rager, a
sophomore, after missing a year of wrestling due to injuries, is fighting
his way back in the tough 189-pound class.Ê He lost a couple of tough
matches to Corby Mercer of Eastside and Lee Ulmer of Triton.Ê Along with a
forfeit against Kokomo Rager won a hard fought 10-8 decision against
Valley’s Tyler Kottkamp.
ÊÊÊ Trenton Plummer (135), Shawn Bozarth (140), and David Sumpter (145) went
winless for the day, although Plummer and Sumpter were awarded forfeits.
