The Warsaw wrestling team finished fifth in a field of 14 teams at the Lake Central Tournament Saturday, with three of the Tigers winning individual championships.
The first-place finishers for Warsaw were Anthony Boley (103 pounds), Isaac Perry (160) and Joey Navarro (275).
Anthony Boley showed excellent technique in pinning all of his opponents in the first period of each of his matches. First he pinned Brian Shutka of Hammond Gavit in 58 seconds, then he nailed Matt Ferry of Lafayette Jefferson in 1:00, and in the championship, Boley scored a fall over Tim Hunt of Munster in 50 seconds.
Perry’s opponents were unable to score any points other than escapes, and many of these were intentional releases by Perry so he could score another takedown. In the first round, Perry defeated Robert Abeyta of Lake Station in a 19-3 technical fall, and in round two, he scored another technical fall, 20-4, over Robert Trevino of Gavit.
Perry’s next two matches were a little tougher. He defeated Ryan Spencer of Lake Central 5-2, and in the finals, Perry controlled Adam Anderson of Highland with a 7-4 decision.
Joey Navarro repeated as champion at Lake Central with three pins and a decision. Gavits’ Chris Eslick was his first victim at 3:29, then Julio Rodriguez of East Chicago Central fell at 2:22.
In the semifinal round, Navarro took out Franklin Williams of Lafayette Jefferson in the first period at 1:45.
In the championship match, Navarro had all he could handle with a strong Curtis Bush of Highland, but Navarro came out the winner in a 3-2 decision to earn his second Lake Central championship.
Four Tiger wrestlers were knocked out of the competition after losing in their first two matches: Daniel Harter (119), Chris Riley (125), Trenton Plummer (135) and Dustin Gochenour (140).
Several of the Tigers were able to win one match but still did not place in the tournament, losing twice before reaching any qualifying rounds.Ê
Tanner Connealy (112) pinned Nate Dodge of Hammond Clark in 23 seconds. Adam Bott (130) was ahead 6-1 in his opening round match when he was upended and pinned by Chris Brooker of Kankakee Valley with only five seconds remaining in period one. Bott came back in his next match and defeated Brent Hardy of Lafayette Jefferson in a 6-3 decision.
Micah Seisennop racked up the second varsity win of his young career when he took a substantial 11-3 lead before nailing a 3:58 pin of Gabriel Ruiz of East Chicago Central. Lake Central’s Bob Costello was defeated by Adam Galvin in a 13-10 decision.
In his rookie varsity appearance, Tyler Miller moved up from his junior varsity 171-pound class to wrestle at 189 pounds, where he took out No. 2 seed Rubin Hinojosa of Hammond Gavit with a startling 47 second pin.
Richard Wolfe (171) took fourth place for the Tigers, defeating Jason Bodnar of Calumet in an 11-1 major decision. In the semifinal round, he fell to Highland’s Matt Jones at 4:35 and in the consolation round, Wolfe was bested by Darren Watkins of Indianapolis North Central 8-3.
After losing in the opening round, Kris Hueber (215) came back to win his next four matches to take fifth place in the tournament. In that first-round match, Hueber had a commanding 6-0 lead when he was caught in a headlock and pinned by Jermey Glenn of South Bend Washington, but in the wrestle-back bracket, the Tiger roared back with three pins and a decision.Ê
Hammond Clark’s Dan Garivay fell in 32 seconds, Munster’s Jake Skelton at 2:20 and Ryan Eades of Lafayette Jefferson in 35 seconds. In his final match of the day, Hueber wore himself out but came up the winner in an 11-4 decision over Troy Lewis of Lake Station to earn fifth place.
The top seven teams in the tournament were as follows: Hobart 180 points, Highland 172, Lake Central 167.5, Munster 128, Warsaw 122, Calumet 119, and Indianapolis North Central 114.
