Forfeits Help Warsaw Wrestlers Beat Concord

By Jim Brenneman, Times-Union Sports Correspondent

The Tiger wrestlers visited the Concord gym Thursday and barely escaped with a win but, thanks to four forfeits in the lower weight classes, the Tigers won the meet 40-30.

Warsaw was defeated on the mat however, losing five matches before coming up with an actual win in head-to-head competition.Ę In fact, Warsaw only won three of the 14 matches while Concord won seven. To say the least, Warsaw coach Tony Boley was disappointed.

Meanwhile, Concord coach Steve Zimmerman was ecstatic. “I liked what I saw,” he said. “I liked it a lot.”

Concord has five undefeated wrestlers, including the four seniors and Jason Bleiler, a sophomore.

Warsaw won by forfeit at 103 pounds, 112, 119 and 130.Ę Warsaw’s John Milton (125) saw his first action after recovering from an injury.Ę

Wrestling against Brett Bultemeier, Milton looked good in the first round grabbing an opening takedown, but then Bultemeier escaped with a Granby Roll. By the second round Milton was running out of gas and was nearly taken down at the buzzer.

In the third period, Bultemeier reversed control for two points and then he was awarded penalty points when Milton was charged with stalling to win the match 5-2.

Warsaw lost at 135 when Trenton Plummer was pinned by Jason Bleiler at 2:29.Ę Then the Tigers lost a close match as Dustin Gochenour (140) was outlasted by Josh Detwiler in an 11-12 decision.

With 10 seconds remaining the score was tied, but Gochenour gave away an escape to give the win to Bleiler by just one point.

Warsaw’s Micah Seisennop (145) was pinned by Jake Creasbaum in 2:40, and Adam Glavin (152) lost a 3-2 decision to Concord senior Jeremy Beard.

Referring to these close matches, Boley said, “Our young guys need to learn how to win. I am so disappointed, I expected more.”

Warsaw’s first win came by means of Isaac Perry (160), who remained undefeated after outscoring Nathan Boyce. Perry could not nail Boyce to the mat and had to settle for a major decision by 16-5.

Richard Wolfe, wrestling for Warsaw at 171, was the victim of a scoring attack by Mike Robinson. Wolfe managed a few escapes, but Robinson was relentlessly aggressive.Ę Robinson was ahead 13-4 when he finally turned Wolfe to his back and scored a fall in the final period at 5:12.

Boley had some positive comments regarding the performance of sophomore Tyler Miller (189).Ę

“He did our stuff,” said Boley, “just like what we teach in the practice room. Tyler showed good effort and pounded from the top.”

Miller worked hard and scrambled through the entire match but he lost a tough fought battle to Nick Leffert by a 3-0 score.

Warsaw’s two upper weights came through with solid and convincing pins.Ę

Kris Hueber (215) earned the Tiger’s second win as he snatched a takedown nine seconds into the match against Concord’s Mark Hall and earned the pin at 1:30 in the first period.Ę

The last of Warsaw’s three wins came when Joey Navarro (275) rattled off three takedowns before crunching Jacob Ramirez at 1:32.

Warsaw’s next match is the Elkhart Memorial Invitational at 9 a.m. Saturday.
