MISHAWAKA –ÊWarsaw advanced three wrestlers through the first day of competition at the Mishawaka Wrestling Invitational.

Isaac Perry (160 pounds) remains unbeaten on the season as he won all three of his matches Wednesday to move forward to the second day of competition. Joey Navarro went undefeated with a forfeit and two wins (275) and Kris Hueber (215) also won three of matches heading into Thursday’s wrestling.

The rest of the Tigers were eliminated from the competition, suffering two losses.

Coach Tony Boley said to the team, “You guys worked hard, you did your best, but things didn’t work out.”

With 31 schools participating, this is a major event, similar in size to the state tournament.Ê This Mishawaka competition is what assistant coach Tony Perry called “the big decider.” Perry said, “Many of the champions at Mishawaka have come back to win big at Indianapolis.”

The Mishawaka Tournament is loaded with ranked wrestlers and returning state champions and is a serious tune-up for the road to the state finals.

Warsaw’s Richard Wolfe (171) won three matches on the day but fell to returning Mishawaka champ Marcus Schontube of Lowell, also a state champion last year at the same weight class.

Anthony Boley (103) suffered two losses, including a 14-13 decision in a rematch with Anthony Lemon of Northridge. John Milton (125) started the day by pinning Adam Kwolek of Lake Central in 4:40, but then fell victim to Bobby Moldonado of East Chicago Central in 1:53.

Milton was on the way to winning in his third match, but he suffered an injury and was forced to default. David Sumpter (140) pinned Kyle Hawkins of East Chicago Central in 2:35 but then lost his next two matches. Nick McKinley (152) notched a pin at 1:07 over Kayne Christlieb of Prairie Heights in his first match before he was eliminated with two losses.

In the tournament, there are eight wrestlers in each weight class, four who have only one loss in the tournament and four who are undefeated.Ê Wrestling continues at 9 a.m. Thursday.
