Warsaw wrestlers fell to 2-2 in Northern Lakes Conference competition after losing to Plymouth 45-27 Thursday evening.
“I saw some great effort out there tonight from our young guys,” said Warsaw coach Tony Boley. “It was the best match Adam Bott ever wrestled, and Micah Siesennop had one of his best matches.”
Still, Warsaw’s inexperience in the lower weight classes enabled Plymouth to rack up six wins in a row, including four pins.
Anthony Boley (103 pounds) opened the evening for the Tigers against Brandon Shanks, squeezing a pin with a figure-four headlock at 5:40.
Tiger Tanner Connealy (112) came out on fire and scored a quick takedown but was ultimately outscored by Glen Ringer, a junior, in a 12-3 major decision. The Tigers forfeited at 119 pounds, and then Warsaw’s Chris Riley (125) was pinned by Adam Frey in 1:17.
Adam Bott (130) came up against Chris Hutchinson, who qualified for semistate last year. Bott nailed two takedowns in period one to go ahead 4-1. In the final period, Hutchinson fought back to a tie at 6-6, taking the match to overtime. Bott attacked but was thrown and pinned at 6:28.
Trenton Plummer (135) was pinned in 3:56 by Senior Chris Glaub, another semistate qualifier in 1999. David Sumpter (140) used “Tiger Technique” to score two takedowns and a reversal for a 6-3 lead over Jared Baker, but then while attempting a unique move, Sumpter found himself pinned at 3:03.
Another outstanding performance was turned in by Siesennop (145).Ę
Siesennop took down Keegan Campbell and had him on his back when Campbell appeared to suffer an injury. The referee called a time out, leaving Siesennop ahead 6-0. Campbell grabbed momentum and took the lead.Ę
Siesennop answered back, notching a pin at 4:50.
Sophomore Nick McKinley ran into Plymouth senior and 1999 semistate qualifier, John Funk. Though Funk scored six takedowns and two nearfalls, he was unable to pin McKinley and had to settle for a 20-4 technical fall.
Warsaw’s Isaac Perry (160), ranked No. 5 in the state coaches’ poll, was not able to pin his sophomore opponent, Chris May, winning instead by a 12-5 decision.
The Tigers’ three ranked wrestlers faced “tough opponents who came ready to wrestle” said Boley.
Richard Wolfe (171) showed no mercy on his freshman victim, pinning Joe Quintana in 2:25.
Chris Hoffer had the dubious privilege of meeting Matt Arvesen at 189 pounds.Ę
Arvesen placed fifth in the state tournament last year and is currently ranked No. 4. Arvesen quickly demonstrated his ranking when he pinned Hoffer in 17 seconds.
Another ranked wrestler for the Tigers is Kris Hueber (215), No. 4 in the current coaches’ poll. Hueber scored three takedowns en route to an 8-2 decision over Mark Palbykin.
Warsaw’s Joey Navarro is ranked No. 3 in the state at 275. In facing Shay Beaver, Navarro seemed to gain some needed confidence in his ability to score takedowns, using with a single-leg, a leg-trip and a shuck to notch a 7-3 win.
While Warsaw drops to 2-2 in the NLC, Plymouth improves its conference record to 4-1. Warsaw travels to NorthWood for a Jan. 13 NLC match.
