Depite the movie is about a grusome tale of survival in the Andes, James Newton Howard composed an unbelievably melodic score. The score may be sad and depress most of the time, but the score is still beautiful. Most of the melodies are played out with strings and woodwinds and brass occasionally. There are at least three themes in the score. The first one is sad as if it is saying it is hopeless to fight againtthe mother nature, which is introduced in the album right away. The second one is sad also but it sounds like a love theme. It is usually played with guitar. The guitar solos in the score is probably the element that makes it a James Newton Howard score. The third one is a an optimistic theme( "We are gonna make it" that kind of stuff.), which appears a few times throughout the album. The album closes with the last melody played in a grand arrangement. The score is not as dark as some of you may think. It is beautiful and rich in melodies, If you get a chance, you should pick it up.
