I have been a fan of Joel McNeely since his scores to Radioland Murders and Shadows of the Empire came out. Iron Will is just a masterpiece. You can clearly hear his very own style in his early scores. That is especially true for the horn lines in the action cues. But ever since he worked with Jerry Goldsmith in Air Force One, his style seems to change a bit. May be Goldsmith's distinct horn sound affects a bit of his? In The Avengers, there are very little places that will tell you this is a McNeely score.

I have heard many good things about this CD before I got it. Maybe because of the high expectation, the score does disappoint me a bit. It is a big orchestral effort from McNeely. In many parts, synthesizer is used also. Laurie Johnson's orginal TV theme is not heard until the last track "The Avengers Theme." I wish McNeely had used the theme in his score and did some enjoyable variations on it. He, instead, composed another theme. It is mysterious and is usually played by strings. I find the theme rather weak and really not as catchy as Johnson's original theme. There are a lot of bombastic action cues and soft semi-melodic cues. But I just don't find them very enjoyable or memorable. The highlight of the album is "Flight of the Mechanical Bees." It has an extremely cool rhythm and brass lines. But many tracks are just not nearly as enjoyable as it. I guess not having enough thematic materials is the problem of this score. It is a nice score to have it in your shelf but I don't think you will play it very frequently.

I also bought the song albums for a cheap price. Marius De Vires' 'techno' version of Johnson's The Avengers Theme is EXTREMELY enjoyable. I bought the album just because of that track. The second track, "Storm," performed by Grace Jones and the Radio Science Orchestra, is also a great track. It could easily be used as one of the James Bond title songs. The huge orchestral background makes the song really enjoyable. I HIGHLY recommend you to pick up the song album if you see it cheap ($4 or less). You won't be disappointed by the two tracks. The other tracks? I skip them all.

By the way, Joel McNeely replaced Michael Kamen in the last minute. The Avengers is the first album of Compass Records. It is a very good and promising release in many ways. Films that do not do well in the box office usually don't get a score only album (if they have a song album already). I am looking forward to their complete score release of David Arnold's Tomorrow Never Dies
