So what is the first hit of Horner after the best selling Titanic is like? It is very "typical". Due to the huge market and the extreme popularity of his score to Titanic, Sony put together a 77 mins plus release for Horner. There are two themes in the album. The first main theme is very Hornerish. It is almost like a cross between the theme to "Glory" and "Apollo 13." It is used mainly for the dramatic sequence. The best version of it is when it is heard in the ending track (end credits in the movie), performed by a chorus. It reminds me of "Glory" a lot. The other theme is used as the love theme. It is a very simple but beautiful piano piece. The love theme is introduced in the score and the movie right away. And it is very effective in the wedding scene. Out of my expectation, the movie is more of a drama than a sci-fi or disaster film. Therefore, the score is very gentle and soft. Although it is not one of most favorite Horner, I must admit that the score works very well with the movie. For other action and dramatic sequence cues, we all have heard them in "Apollo 13" and "Titanic." Also, few of the tracks are going Hans Zimmer! It is not because they sound like Zimmer's score but their length. Three tracks are longer than 10 mins and there is one 8 mins track. In general, it is a good buy if you want more typical Horner. Otherwise, save your money for other big hits coming this summer. | |
