Before I say anything, lets see how Christopher Young describes his score: "There are two predominant themes. One, that's first stated by the eight French horns in the main title, refers to the 'omnipotent power of water' theme previously mentioned, the 'Don't mess with Mother Nature' theme. The second theme is played by the chromatic harmonica and represents Morgan Freeman and hs band of bad guys." Most of Young's scores are horror and suspense, he does not usually compose action score. However, this score does not show any disability of him writing action score. Hard Rain is a large orchestral tongue-to-cheek action score. As he mentioned, there are two major themes in the score. The first theme is kind of standard but effective. The second theme is an excellent theme. It is exotica and catchy. I think the second theme sounds a lot more like the 'Don't mess with Mother Nature' theme than the first one. The theme sounds like "I am alone in a flooded area and I don't know what's gonna happen." Using harmonica in the score is a very wise decision of Young. Both themes merged very well in the Main Title track. The darker moments of the score do sound like a scary score from Young. The action cues are very bombastic and contains a few good motif. However, they are not as melodic as the two themes. If you like non stop large orchestral bombastic action music, this one will not let you down. However, you may get tired of it fairly quickly. Nonetheless, a good score that deserve our recognition. | |
