The Incredible Hulk was one of my favorite series when I was a kid. Of course, I did not understand the sad element of the series and just thought it was cool to watch the green behemoth destroying things. Besides, I have not caught much of the re-runs on TV since I have grown up. Consequently, I don't remember much of the series, not to mention Joe Harnell's music. Joe Harnell has a very strong jazz background and had been studying music with masters like Williams Walton and Aaron Copland. Harnell has also composed music for the TV series "V" - The Original and Alien Nation. This release consists of two portions. The first one is the music from the pilot and the second one is the music from the selected episodes of the series. I personally like the second portion a lot more than the first portion for two reasons: The sound quality is a bit better and the materials are thematically much stronger. You know how sometimes you watch those action/adventure series from the late 70s, early 80s, and you could hear the music is very effective and want to own the soundtrack of it? However, sometimes some of them will lose its magic whey are being enjoyed in a pure listening purpose. Well...that's exactly how I feel about the first portion of the album. "Gamma Ray Treatment" and "Growing Anger" are dark and relatively low key tracks. Track 5 and 6 has some action moments, but they are not thematically very strong. They have a motif or two but they are very short and not very memorable. I don't remember much of the first portions even after a few listen. (Except "The Lonely Man Theme"). Most of the people must be very familiar with "The Lonely Man Theme", especially for those who grew up in the US. It is a very lyrical and beautiful piano theme. It describes the loneliness and sadness of Dr. Banner perfectly. The second portion of the album is the opposite of the first portion. They are all excellent selections from the series. You can tell that they are not only very effective on screen but also very enjoyable. They are all thematically strong and are quite lyrical sometimes. "The Wedding" is a soft version of the main theme. The melody is performed by soft female voices, violins, then French horn and is quite gorgeous. The selections from the episodes "Prometheus" and "The Secret Empire" (track 10, 14, and 15) are tongue to cheek orchestral action tracks. They have very catchy marching rhythm and very exciting motifs. They will get your heart pumping and I guarantee that you will play them over and over again. The selection from "Ricky" is a very jazzy tune which is also very enjoyable. The selection from "Stop Susan Williams" is a slightly upbeat and comical track. The suite from "Homecoming" features a very catchy whistling tune which I always whistle along with it. Track 16 and 17 start to fade back to the quieter moments which features more versions of "The Lonely Man Theme". Just as the liner notes written, "For the sake of posterity there is also a disco version of Harnell's INCREDIBLE HULK theme". The second portion contains back to back good tracks and is highly satisfying. It is understandable that they dedicate a good portion of the album to the pilot. But there is no doubt that the episodes' music is much better. Also the distortion and hissing are not as bothering in the second portion. If you are a fan of the series, you definitely cannot miss this CD. For a film/TV score fan, it would be very nice to have this in your library also.
