Mission: Impossible

Composer: Danny Elfman

Although there are many people who like this score out there, I still it is a disappointment from Elfman. Of course, when scoring the movie, he had to decide if Lalo Schifrin's theme should be in major portion of his score or not. And he decided not to. The major reason why I don't like this score is that it does not have many catchy theme or cue that Elfman's scores usually have. The score may be built up for a moment but then it is gone the next second. I can see why one like this score. Many action sequence cues are well written, but there is no way that you can hum with those. There are some quite passages and I think those are the good place for Elfman to add a theme to it. However he did not. So, all you have is some monotonous Elfman cues. In "Betrayal," the female choir voice part is the closet cue that can be considered as a theme. There is another motif but it is not very memorable. By the way, electric bass and drums are used heavily in this score.
