Composed and Conducted By: John Barry

For a long time, the CD release of this score is only available on a ultra rare A&M Records release and a bootleg CD that also contains the score from For Your Eyes Only. Thanks to Ryko Disc, we don't have to pay a high price in order to get a hold on this score. However, this release did disappoint some film score fans when it was out. First, it does not contain any previously unreleased materials. (Which makes the playing time very short). All of the score selections are identical to the A&M release. Second, some people find the dialogue tracks distracting. But they are fine to me since they do not play over John Barry's score. The album is also an enhanced CD which contains the original trailer of Octopussy. Although the release of this score is more special than many other James Bond scores, the score itself is not any more special than other James Bond scores. I personally don't find this score as enjoyable as From Russia With Love and On Her Majesty's Secret Service, even though the sound qualities o0f them are nothing compare to Octopussy. First of all, Octopussy is not thematically as strong. The only regonizable theme from the score is the instrumental version of the song "All Time High." Although there are very enjoyable moments in action cues like, "Bond Look Alike," "Yo Yo Fight and Death of Vijay," and "The Palace Fight," they don't last very long. In general, the score offers nothing newer than the previous James Bond scores. If you are a Bond or Bond scores fan, you certainly want to own this one. Otherwise, there is no hurry in buying this score. | |
