Although Dennis McCarthy had not composed music for any Star Trek movies before, since he was the composer for the series Star Trek: The Next Generation, there is no surprise that this first Captain Picard Star Trek movie would be his assignment. Star Trek Generations is a score that will neither let you down nor will you a lot of surprises. Other than using Alexander Courage's original theme here and there, he also composed a new theme. It is glorious and has a very good Star Trek flavor. Although one may think it is very standard, I think it is a very enjoyable theme. McCarthy did not change the huge orchestral score style that Star Trek movies used to have. He assembled 95 musicians to perform this score. However, the huge scale orchestra does not help this melodic materials lacking score very much. Other than the two themes mentioned above, the rest of the music is easily forgotten. Most of the battle music is with the famous Mars rhythm from Gustav's Planets. You can tell the battle music would work very well on film. However, when listening to it alone, I don't feel any exitement but simply some heavy sypmphonic sounds. The lack of thematic materials is basically the down side of this score. Nonetheless, one maybe fond of those battle music. If you think you like any kind of huge orchestral sci-fi music, you should still give this score a try. By the way, the sound effects are not interesting at all. Very boring sound effects indeed. | |
