This is a truly truly gorgeous score. It is a lot more enjoyable than The Black Robe, the other of his scores that I own. Steel Magnolias is a very delightful small orchestral score that fills with beautiful melodies. Every time I listening to the album, I will whistle along with most of score. "Main Title" starts off with the main theme right away. It is first played with strings and then harmonica. The style of the theme is similar to some Michael Gore scores (Terms of Endearment, Defending Your Life). It's the very type of theme that you will expect from this kind of movie. It is slow but filled with emotion. A fast paced sub-theme can also be heard in the same track. It is very catchy and sounds like some one is doing errand in a hurry. "Three Fireworks" is another catchy tune that has another fast-paced theme. Too bad that it is really short. "The Drive To Aunt Fern's" is the only sad track. It is not as melodic but it is still beautiful. In "Easter Picnic/Departure" and "End Title," we can hear more beautiful variations on the themes that we hear before.

The score is very soft and relaxing. No brass instrument is used in the music. Harp, Strings, Harmonica, Woodwinds, and Piano are the major instruments. It is so melow and gorgeous that you will want to play the music non stop. The downside of the release is that it is too short. Counting out the last track (which is the same as the first track), we have less than 23 minutes of Delerue's score. Unfortuately, the CD is long out of print and very hard to find. I know the score is re-arranged and recorded in one of the Delerue compilation CD. If you can't find this one, you should try to get a hand on the compilation CD. The real gem that you don't want to miss out.
