There are not many occasions that the score for the sequel film is FAR MORE better than the previous one, especially when they are composed by the same composer. The score for Toy Story 2, however, is one of those rare ones. I don't know how Randy Newman ends up being a regular Disney composer (Toy Story, James and the Giant Peach, A Bug's Life, and Toy Story 2), but I sincerely hope that he will score more Disney films in the future.

The first thing that like about this CD is that he does not sing in any of his songs! Randy Newman is a great song writter but I don't think he is too good of a singer. I think he should let other artists sing his songs more. In this case, his new song "When She Loved Me" is sung by Sarah McLachlan. Score-wise, I think it is as good as his last Disney effort A Bug's Life. So if you like A Bug's Life, I am pretty sure that you will like this score also. In fact, the fast-paced moments of the score are very similar to A Bug's Life, especially the track "Zurg's Planet". Toy Story 2 is far more interesting than Toy Story. Toy Story is a rather dull and boring score. Whereas for Toy Story 2, it is filled with bombastic, rousing, and exciting moments. To my surprise the melody of "You've Got a Friend in Me" can only be heard once in the entire score, which is in "Woody's Dream". This huge orchestral score is half jazzy and somewhat western. There are a lot of double bass and brass instruments solos. The score is also half serious and half playful. Although the score contains quite a bit of different elements, it seems to work quite well. The only down side of the score is that most of the cues don't have strong melodic materials. As you can see, most of the tracks are quite short. "The Cleaner" is only track that presents a strong melodic theme. Each cue does contain different motifs but they are not very memorable Fortunately, the bombastic-ness and playfulness of each track keep them being very enjoyable. In general, if you like a brassive score, this one will not disappoint you. Or I can image you will enjoy the score very much if you have seen the film. But if you are looking for a score that has strong melodies, may be you want to save this one for later.
